      Super 7 9Super 7 8Super 7 7Super 7 6Super 7 5Super 7 4Super 7 3Super 7 2Hi

I am new on here and to be honest not a lathe man at all.

I have inherited a Myford Super 7 from my father in law, and I haven't any idea of either it's value or any of it's features to advertise. While it is tempting to keep, unfortunately I am going to have to let it go.

I would be grateful for any advice anyone can give on this.

          Hi Paul,

There is an older thread on this topic here. Do a websearch and see what other Super 7 sells for, may be also see if there is a model engineer club near you that can give advice.

From the photos your lathe is equipped with a Norton gearbox and some tooling.

Yes do your research, looks a tidy machine so maybe £1500-2000? Lots of these come up on Ebay some for silly money.

Hi Paul, the machine looks to be from the 1950's but go on Myford web site and look up the number — stamped on the bed usually close to the chuck or tailstock end. Don't look at their prices it will probably give you false impression of the value of your machine.

A big plus is the gearbox this will enhance its value, however it looks to me as though it has been re-painted and there are signs of some rust but its not really possible to form a proper opinion of condition from the photo's.

Condition is everything — well almost –with regard to value, as Thor says you really need some hands on advice so a local club may help or say where you are and there may well be a member close by who would help.

Tony is spot on mentioning silly money being paid for these on ebay.

It is worth whatever someone is prepared for it, which in this case may be a lot more than it's actual value. Myford Lathes have a very considerable following and a fair number of people completely lose their heads in their desire to own one, irrespective of condition.

On the whole it's a sellers market. If you auction a reasonable condition Myford on ebay it might well trigger a feeding frenzy, making more than £2000. Don't blame me if you choose a bad moment and it goes for a song.

That people persistently pay excessive amounts for Myfords isn't popular in the model engineering community because it tends to push craftsmen who would make best use of of a decent lathe out of the market. It's not unknown for sellers in your position to let estate lathes go cheap to deserving cases as a way of perpetuating the deceased's hobby; was your father-in-law in a club?

If you don't want the hassle of selling it yourself there are a number of dealers who would take it off your hands. As they have to make a living, don't expect them to pay anything like as much as a private buyer.

Paul, The machine number starts SK?????. I can just make it out on the front of the bed in your pictures and it helps to quote it. The gearbox has a number too QC?????, stamped on the r/h end. You don't show any other chucks, particularly a 4 jaw (not drill chucks) Various aspects put it at early 60s and it has raising blocks, Myford stand, drip tray and of course gearbox. The motor on the floor seems extra – a spare in addition. There are no other extras like vertical slides, steadies, etc which would increase the value. Don't run it without checking oil levels and do you have the service manual? A buyer should want to see it run.

I don't think its been repainted: the finish is too good. Just never been used as in no paint chips and only basic additional equipment. Hence the superficial rust on unpainted surfaces. The state of the bed matters a lot and whether the carriage will slide all along it without any looseness. Include a picture of the l/h end of the bed for any damage as that means a lot too.

It would help you to say where your are in your profile, if only approximately, and a buyer may emerge locally. The world is as Tony and Dave say. If it is the unused/unworn machine it appears to me to be then 2K is not impossible.

Firstly apologies for not responding before now, I have been away this week.

Also wanted to thank everyone for their responses, they have been very helpful. The machine is near Bedford, so will ask around the area and see if there are any local clubs there.
