Hi In the past I have welded model aircraft crankcases with Lumiweld Alloy solder Now I have one with part of the exhaust stub missing .It is threaded to take the muffler bolts. I know I can fill the void but how do I heep the new thread I need to cut aligned with the thread in the remaining half still in place on the cylinder .I have taps etc .Can I drill through from the existing thread without damage to it. If so I could tap through from the existing thread. Is this possible do you think?

Further to my previous post would it be possible to leave a length of studding screwed in to the existing thread then sort of cast the Lumiweld round the studding . Unscrewing later but how would I stop the lumiweld from sticking to the studding?

I have never used Lumiweld but I have protected threads when silver soldering by coating them with liquid Tippex

Was told that Lumiweld doesn't stick to stainless steel. Looks like it doesn't stick to steel either :- **LINK** .

With a thread I'd be happier if there were some sort of clean, low adhesion plating or coating on it to help stop the thread pulling out. Sooting really doesn't seem the thing when its universally agreed that the secrets to success is absolute cleanliness and scratching though the aluminium oxide layer so the Lumiweld can do its melting point reduction magic. Way back i recall seeing a steel bolt or shaft put into a solution of something in water and pulled out a few hours later with a thin, fairly easily scrubbed off, layer of copper on it. If memory is correct might be worth looking into.

Dunno how well the Lumiweld would follow the threads in the stud tho'. I'm considerably less than expert but my blobby bits didn't come out with a very good replica of the surfaces they fell on when examined after scraping off.

              Clive.

The answer maybe to do what Mick H suggests and withdraw the screw and drill and insert a thread insert?

Whatever you decide I'd have a little experiment on some scrap. Practice=not making things worse. Ask how I know…

                    John,

If you, as suggested in your original post, can drill from the already threaded side then putting a tapping size drill down this hole should not cause a problem to the existing thread, which will be tidied up anyway when you follow this up with the tap.

                    Rod

                    Edited for typo.
