Can anyone recommend a company that would cut out two model car chassis from 12mm thick mild steel 400mm long 60mm wide.

      thanks

I've used Sciss a few times, they are Model Engineer friendly.

That's some chassis for a model cardisgust

We drag race 1/24 slotcars made from about 1.5mm wire soldered together. These crash at about 30mph. That's actual, not scale speed…

It’s for a 2.5cc tether car it should do 150mph needs to be rigid.

I get that, but real cars that do 150mph aren't made from 12mm thick steel. Wouldn't shaping the chassis from thinner sheet be easier?

I suppose it depends on how the sheet is cut if most is going to be removed with the water jet cutting to leave chassis rails and cross members of say 12mm high x 6mm wide that is not a lot different to a fully size car cassis made from 100 x 50 box section.

Or it could be that the waterjet will only be used to cut the outer profile which can then be milled into a "tub"

When the water jet cutting has finish their will be very little of the steel left, I will post a picture of it when it’s cut.

Can't wait for the cut job, any drawings ?

Just venturing into laser myself at the moment, very pleased with the quotes that I am getting,  but its all about quantities.

You will probably have to take a screen shot and post as a .jpg image

Here is the chassis the solid parts in the middle will be machined to fit the engine and gearbox the little rectangular boxes will but cut and used as brackets.

That certainly does not look to have much in the way of excess weight. Before seeing it I thought CNC would be another option and it still would be but would leave a larger radius in the internal corners unless a lot of time was spent cleaning them out with a small dia cutter with long flutes/shank so the Water Jet method will be best.

Sciss will quote from an e-mailed file quite quickly, you will need to discuss finish as they have about 5 grades of cut depending on what surface finish you want, it is possible to have a different finish on the sam epart eg a fine one on the outside and coarser on the inner cutouts.

I dont know where you are located but I had a part cut by a company in Macclesfield. I have no connection to them but the work they produced was excellent and the service went above and beyond the call of duty!

(Due to a communication error [50/50 really] they made the wrong item. I collected it one afternoon, discovered the error and they made the correct item and hand delivered it 20 miles early evening!)

My part was cut from 2" thick ali plate but the edges had less than 1mm taper and I mostly finished by drawfile.

                                    Company is tmcwaterjet
