Last weekend talktalk started up their latest secure Web Mail site and in doing so crashed out many free standing email clients.

To whit:- Windows live mail. I could send emails but not receive them so had to use the talktalk web mail to read incoming emails, in doing so I fell foul of the security protocols they had installed.

Now I can get to the web mails but do not like the format.

This leaves me with:- Windows Live Mail (I know it is no longer supported but I like the format and how it wiorks) Function wise it now keeps asking for a P/W and after 20 years I can no longer remember the original P/W.

What I cannot get to grips with is how I can get it to receive and sebd again. having changed the P/W it still does not work. what next I ask?

Clive, now soggy minded by all this !

Re:- Windows live mail. The protocol is POP3 and talktalk suggest I enter the out going Port as 587 and the incoming port as 995 and tick both SSL boxes but this then resets the out and In Ports back to default numbers and the POP3 and outgoing Port to 25. are then highlighted in Blue. It all goes nowhere, Help !

Assuming that you have a PC or MAC, just download Thunderbird and stop using webmail.

+1 for Thunderbird. I have used it for years, works on Windows 7, 8, 10 Mac and Linux. Free Download Here

I have considered loading another platform, I already have gmail but only because it came with the Google. It is my alternate site for talktalk to contact me whhen things go wrong.

What puzzles me is how do I now connect Windos live mail to the new talktalk ssystem now they have changed the security protocols.

Within the day I will make my mind up about Thunderbird or go with gmail.

                  Thank you for the suggestions.

I have been reading up on changing pop3 to IMAP on windows live mail, basically you cannot change once the original set up is done to pop3. You have to set another account configured to IMAP. Then drag over any files you want.

Looks like another email client is needed so still looking.

Gmail and other service providers still support DeltaSync, so users can still use Windows Live Mail with non-Microsoft email accounts. … Windows Essentials 2012, including Windows Live Mail 2012, reached end of support on 10 January 2017, and is no longer available for download from Microsoft.

Thunderbird, no problem, old fashioned looking format, gmail I never got to grips with.

                            Maybe you can't.

I don't have talktalk or Windows Live Mail to check but from the description it seems Windows Live Mail is preconfigured to use the original standard port (110) for POP3 email and won't allow you to change it. Unfortunately it seems talktalk have reconfigured your account and is listening for your POP3 email requests on port 995. Port numbers are rather like telephone numbers – in effect, port 110 has been disconnected, all you have to do is change your email client to call 995 instead.

I don't know why Windows Live Mail won't let you change the POP3 port – it's unnecessarily officious if Microsoft deliberately made it that way, but they are plonkers sometimes!

Might be a simple permissions problem though; your system is set-up conventionally to stop ordinary users from tampering with system settings. Have you tried changing the port number with Windows Live Mail while logged in as 'admin'? Perhaps your normal user account doesn't have the privileges needed to save the change.

If that doesn't work I'd install a mail client that does allow you to set port numbers. Like the two Johns I'm happy with Thunderbird.

This is the sort of problem you can run into by not keeping a computer system up-to-date. No matter how keen we might be to leave well alone the world moves on regardless. Not just us golden oldies who have our bubbles popped – I spent today helping my nephew (23) sort out his old Linux server. The machine has worked perfectly 24×7 from new and never been upgraded. Unfortunately last week a disk partition filled up and had to be resized. This is an easy 2 minute job with a tool called 'gparted' but it wasn't installed. Problem – his Linux version was so far out of support that downloads aren't available for it! To get gparted we had to install a current Linux from scratch and then reconfigure all his software and accounts! Argh! Today would have been a non-problem if he'd upgraded annually. Reminds me, I'd better make sure my rarely used Windows 10 is still OK. I've not upgraded it for ages…

IMAP has its advantages if you use the same email account on more than one device. I pick my main email up on anyone of 5 devices. I can read the email and it shows up as read on all the devices. If I delete an email it dis-appears off all the devices. I have POP3 accounts also on the same devices but if I wish to delete and email I have to do each device separately. This is a Grade A pain in the A..e.

                              IMAP for me.

Which version of Windows are you using? (half expects "Windows 95&quot

If Vista or later why not try Windows Mail

Thunderbird works fine, but is clunky.

I wouldn't want to be without Outlook though.

Just realized all my contacts are in windows live mail! I must print them off but I bet it does not print addresses!

I will wait till Mon. as then Talktalk techies will come back to me to ask how I got on. Maybe I will stick to talktalk web mail as it is the resipient of all my in mail after all. Gmail can act as my alternate email recipient, this is all really complicated at my age.

Clive.  Just checked and it does print all the details.

In case you haven't already done so, as well as printing a paper copy, print to pdf as well, so you have an electronic copy too.
That way, even if you can't export you address book as a file, you can copy and paste into your new program without having to key everything in; saves the inherent risk of typos.

Neil, I use Win 7. which is fine for what I need. Again found out that Win 7 is the only one NOT supplied with an email client when first came out.

Something else has popped up, Windows updates cannot get through? because the email cannot send nor receive. One thing always leads to another!

Running a website, including email host and forwarding, I seem to get loads more grief with TalkTalk clients than those with any other provider.
