      Evening,

I have to build a machine that cuts slots in something.

It needs to cut a number of slots at the same time.

My plan is to use several collet holders in bearings mounted into a platform, they would all be belt / chain driven.

I'm wondering if the shaft on the collet holder below would press straight into a bearing or would it be a loose fit?

      Thanks.

I have an ER32 and a smaller ER11 (I think) with nominal Ø16 shanks. As far as I can measure without a temperature controlled workshop and un-calibrated mics and Vernier callipers (real Vernier, not digital) they are parallel and consistently Ø15.98. However I may just have been lucky and some out there may be a bit more variable.

Can’t you use a single spindle and arbor to gang mill the slots or do you have to use slot drills.

Sounds a little bit like gang milling on a horizontal mill…?

Hi, thanks for the replies, the shape of the slots needs to be as an endmill would make them, an extended circle. ie. two parallel sides and a radius at each end. So I can't use a single spindle unfortunately.

I will order some collet holders tomorrow and try them, if they are not press fit then I will use bearing with grub screw (RA?).

                Thanks for your help.

                  .

Loctite 'Bearing Fit' would [in my opinion] do a better job than a grub screw.
