Hello all

I have been converting my Elliott 10m shaper into a Drill and routing machine ,

The heastock/spindle is from a mini lathe and is fixed where the clapper box once lived, the Drill part works the same as the with a head having both lever and fine-feed movements. much the same as the Wolf Jahn precision milling machine but mine is more heavily built, it works Great!

What is puzzling me though, is trying to work out the drive side, pulleys and what motor, Routers work at quite high speed, around 8000rpm upwards

Could I get there with a pulley system? or what motor would be best to use?

the original 3 phase hoover motor only has 900 or so rpm, I have this for sale on ebay at the moment with the converter

anybody have some advice to the best way to work the drive side what pulleys or motor to use

Given the strength of such a machine I would have thought you would rather want it to work as a vertical miller rather than a router. At 8000 RPM I would have thought you would also start making most drilling operations somewhat oversped.

Hello Lee,

Routers need all the rpm you can give them, I might be inclined to canniibalise an angle grinder and use the motor from that for router work

I do though have some reservations about running a mini lathe headstock spindle at speeds of up to 20,000 rpm, without accounting for the loss of power it would absorb. With a conversion as radical as this why not equip it with differing 'heads' for drilling and routing and retain it's use as a shaper with the motor/inverter you have already by withdrawing the sale.

It seems rather wasteful of the rest of a well built and sturdy machine not to keep that availability against a possible future need.

Would be a lot easier to make a simple bracket to mount a 1/4" router in place of the clapper box, probably pick up a router for less than a decent motor and you would have a high speed spindle and collet to boot.

Watchmakers lathes, engraver, and die sinkers all get to high speeds with pulley systems so perfectly doable. You start to need lighter oils for the spindle to avoid drag and the byproduct of that as heat. The GA die sinker uses 3/4 hp for its spindle but of course the cutter is expected to be small and likewise rate of metal removal. Wood would be different.

Have you considered an air die grinder spindle? Perhaps no help if you have mounted the lathe one.

I can understand what been said,

Well this is where I am getting abit puzzed to get this machine working regarding motor power for Routing, but being able to do millingl with ease and be able to have a good heavy duty drill press, I have never owned a decant drill press, I have a 27 by16''cast iron work table to fit this machine, with this machine I would be getting a ajustable throat distance thanks to the Ram being safely pushed in and out to 17-18 inches

I did think of using something like the 3HP Hitachi M12 router but not any good for milling steel

yes I would like to use a pulley system, but i not sure where to start to work it all out , motor size? is one puzzler for me, I know I have the pulleys and the 1/3hp to get 2500rpm but getting treble that for wood routingt, but also to get me down to around 80-100 mark without stalling the motor,

Perhaps I am asking too much
