      Hello

      My Elliott Shaper has developed a clanking sound. I noticed that the the key on the gear drive cog had a sloppy keyway/key I stripped it all down, fixed it, reasembled it, started the machined up, clanking sound gone, but then after a short while, back it came again, on searching for info on the web, sombody mentioned the first place to start with noisey shapers is the Die block and pin , I started to examin that, stripped out the die block, to me there seems nothing wrong with it, it has a nice tight snug fit in the rocker arm, with no noticable slop or movement, but I did notice that when I push the Ram back and forward by hand I can hear a slight clanking sound,

      it looks like the Die block pin/bolt is the problem, where it fits into the slots on the bull wheel, there is a noticable amount of movement when I twist the bolt back and forward, the bolt/pin looks like a normal bolt with a round flat top but with two flat edges each side, could be called mushroom head bolts

      I cant understand that, when I tighten the die block up, the die pi/bolt has movement in it anyway, when the thing is tightened up, it should be clamped tight to inside of the bull wheel slots and the die block moves round the pin/bolt and slides up down the rocker arm

      I cannot understand what is happening , do anybody have any thoughts on this

          Hello Lee,

          There are three points where wear leading to clanking can occur, the die block pivot you have tackled.

          The second is wear in the oilite bush for the driving pin in the bull wheel that fits into the bottom yoke of the rocking arm and the final spot is at the top of the rocking arm which is located by a top pin held in the adjustable mounting off the underside of the ram.

          Your die block attention may just have moved things about from their settled position for a spell before things eased back again on further running.

          PS Mine has a gentle clanking which has been with it for years, it sounds rather like an old agitator washing machine and I just live with it as the level of noise is unchanged over time. If it gets worse I'll look into it.

            I'm in that camp. My Acorn does a bit of clanking now and then and pumping a bit of oil into the nipple on top of the ram quietens it down for a while so I presume it's the die block

            Occasionally I will pump air through a nipple to clear anything out from it's previous working life, (a prior owner used grease) then followed by more oil

            They can do an amazing amount of hard work and if my experience with old lathes is relevant the complete elimination of all backlash is not worth the effort

              Ok Brian and Ady, thanks for your reply

              Been out there looking at it again today, something I did not notice was the Tee slotted Cam for the crossfeed was sloppy in movement, when I pushed the Ram back and fourth, the Cam had quite alot of noticable Backlash, I took the side cover off to exspose the whole Cam wheel, it is held on by a pin that runs right through the bull wheel shaft, I tapped the pin through and it came out in two halves, one side of the hole was inlarged, so this must of been slopping with the backlash and so causing a big part of the clank noise, I cannot understand how I missed that one, I drilled out the hole and cut a thread in there and srewed a bolt through, so now it's nice and tight , It dont look bogdy because it's hidden inside the side cover of the machine. I put it all back together started the machine, all I can hear now is I suppose like you mentioned a soft clunk knowwhere near as the sound it was giving out before, I will put it down to the die block pin having slight bit of ware , it's all good to me now

              Out of interest, do you Grease the cogs or just keep them well oiled?

                I only ever use oil on my machinery now. When I used grease on my lathe it was a very messy disaster

                There may be a couple of zones where grease is recommended by the manufacturer though, if you can locate a manual then it would help

                  I used the advice above and put some grease on the main drive gears then squirted a bunch of oil through the oil hole drilled in the crank for the die block

                  My clunking sound has now completely disappeared and she purrs along

                        Thank you all for posting back.

                        I downloaded the manual, same one as Robbo put up, looks like gears should be greased up, I better switch to greasing the cogs, I was oiling them for the reason of grease picking up bits of swarth, with it being sort of having open gears, I'll do what the book states,

                        Going back to the clanking sound from these machines, I suppose the machine could be in prestine cosmetic condition, well maintain over it's life time when we get hold of them, because of their age and them being used for what they were built for, we can say they are bound to of picked up some ware over the years

                        The person I got my shaper from, said it came out of a Big hospital maintainance department, I did think it was unusual it comming fro a hospital, he could not tell me how old it was though, I would be interested to find out

                          Lee, a good modern alternative to grease on gears is to use spray-can motorcycle chain lube. It is Extreme Pressure lube, just right for gears, and sets like a tacky glue that does not fling off and does not attract swarf quite as much as grease. Trick is to spray it on and leave it to set overnight before running the machine. This lets it set nice and tacky.

                          Been doing this on my ancient lathe's unguarded change gears for some years and very pleased with the result.

                          And hospital origin is quite possible. I worked in several hospitals and they have a surprising array of equipment to maintain, including some largish boilers, steam plant and HVAC systems. So used to often have a few machine tools, lathe, mill, shaper, welder etc for the maintenance fitters to use. I suppose these days its all done by contractors on call who just replace whole assemblies and charge accordingly.

                            Hello Hopper. I never thought of the spray on Chain grease, that would make it alot easier to get it inside the machine onto the cogs, if I remember right, they do that stuff with PTFE soaked into it, with good slippery ware properties

                              Lee – my Alba also has a gentle clank. It's not loud or menacing enough to suggest instant investigation and for the time being it can stay as it is – it's rather soothing when I think about it!

                                Rik, I have ironed out all the noises that were really annoying me , now that is all I have is a gentle clank, for all I know these shapers might even make this sort of noise , I am happy with it now, it runs a treat, just make sure I dont stare at it while it's running

                                        What sort of work do you do on your shaper lee ? I am considering buying a cheap one, dunno why, but i have a hankering for one.

                                          For me a lathe does the round stuff and a shaper does the square and flat stuff

                                          It's the first machine I've come across which gets scarier the better you get to know it which is the opposite to a lathe for me

                                          The really scary bit is the rams' inexorable march through whatever you put in front of it, the ram stops for nothing, ever. Most of the time this is the workpiece at the point of the tool but every now and then if you are roughing down an odd bit of metal it will take too big a bite and shove the work right out of the vice. I tend to put my work lengthways because of the potential for disaster with a shaper.

                                          A shaper simply powers its way through the weakest point in the cycle, I have read of the entire work table being removed by those big cincinatti shapers when something went wrong

                                          I don't put very much rake in my tools either to reduce the chance of a dig-in when she's steaming through a bit of metal

                                          On a passive workpiece the formation and removal of chips is strangely mesmerising as it carves those curly smoking bits of swarf out

                                            Yes ady, i agree, they are mesmerising to watch and that is part of the attraction. Also the finish is superior (usually) to end milling and i have seen finished cuts that were more than acceptable. But they are slower and not as versatile or as easy to use as a vertical mill. Still want one though.

                                              Actually the shaper does not always win. My 6 inch Ammco had a repair done to the slotted arm long before I bought it…it must have had a crash and the weakest link turned out to be there. Quite interesting because on those machines the bull wheel is fiber and apparently have been known to rip teeth out.

                                              My 18 inch Alba had also had an accident at some point. The dovetail on the gib strip side of the downfeed was broken away enough that one screw was missing. I was able to machine the break to a flat seating and then add a piece on with capscrews. This was then machined to match the dovetail and a hole tapped for the gib strip screw. Once painted, the repair was invisible.

                                              The other machine, a 10 inch Alba, seems to have lead a more sheltered life. I did have a 14 inch one too. That came to me in pieces and appeared to have barely even have turned over. Probably spent about 50 years disassembled.

                                                I think the problem with a shaper is that once the cut starts… that's it going to happen and there's no stopping it in time to avert any problems which arise

                                                With a lathe you can often pull the tool out when something starts to happen, like with parting, you can hop in and out of the cutting zone to get a job done

                                                On a shaper the cutting cycle must run its course and there's not so much scope for "giving it a shot and seeing how it goes"
