As the snow melts on your shed roof it shows you where the insulation is poorest.
On my store shed I have so far only insulated half the roof. Stark difference in melting rate. On the uninsulated side there is a thin 1in brace and a thin line of snow still remains to show its position. The insulated side has 2 in still all over.

Applies to your house too. In my street some have clear top but snow on lower half of roof indicating low loft insulation but not heating much either. Other have clear edge but snow on top indicating good loft insultion but a hot house losing heat from windows and walls.

I'm in the middle of the Clyde – approximately level with Glasgow. I like your reasoning about heat loss but it doesn't apply here – we haven't had any snow!

I like to let a little heat into the loft. A friend went away over christmas one year (not a particularly cold one either). He came back and found a burst water pipe in the loft had soaked all the thermalite blocks in his interior walls. He was living in a hotel for 4 months while his house was dried out. I always leave the loft hatch open and the central heating on low when I go away in the winter.

Rod,

You could always try insulating directly under the roof tiles (or whatever tops your house). It's much better for the contents of the loft; if you have a loft conversion it will be done that way anyway. Fibreglass between rafters, and then lining paper stapled to rafters to keep the dust in.

I probably should do as you suggest. We've recently had the cavity walls filled. I was somewhat reluctant because of the potential disruption and mess but Mrs J prevailed. Apart from the incident where the installers mis-measured the junction between cavity and single skinned walls and filled my workshop (garage) with rockwool everything was pretty straightforward. I have to say I have been very surprised at the difference it has made to the comfort of the house, although in theory less heat will leak out of the house into the workshop (garage).

Doese not apply to my workshop as the cottage was built in the early 1700s and was a cider house so have used the cellar as my workshop. this the whole size of the cottage. But could I reccomend that you insulate all of the roofs and the sides and clad. your workdhop

BTW PUR insulaton like Celotex and Kingspan is around 50% better than glass fibre insulaton but much more expensive. My planned new workshop will have 6 in of Kingspan which should make it cosy but at the expense of a significant loss of space. I'm thinking long term when I retire I will be able to spend all day in it as heat will be £1 a unit.
