When I type text in this box why cannot I get the carriage return to work. Everything ends up as a single paragraph. What am I doing wrong or do I really have to keep copying and pasting frrom Word?? —-Stuart

            Hello Stuart.

At the end of this line there is a Return that creates a blank line.

At the end of this line
there is a Shift + Return that creates a new line for this text.

            Best regards

              Hello Stuart.

I'm sorry in my previous message I failed miserably to explain myself to you what I meant.

If you hit the Return key somewhere in a line, the next line will be written after a blank line.
If you want to create a new line without a blank line before it, please press simultaneously the keys Shift + Return.

The editor in this forum used to work that way.

              Best regards
              Dias Costa

P.S.: To create each of the blank lines you see in theis message I pressed Shift+Return twice.

I must say I hate the double spacing you get from pressing the return key. Since every other program I have ever used is set to give a single line shift on pressing return (i.e. no blank line) I press it twice to get a para spacing, and then have to backspace.

Just one of many naff features of this software.

                David

Thanks all – Sorry but none of that works for me but I have narrowed down the problem. Two weeks ago bought a new all-in-one HP Desktop PC and that is what I am using. However, I have just dug out my old laptop and tried the forum on that and RETURN and SHIFT RETURN work perfectly. So it has to be my new PC that is causing the problem but for now I am not sure what! Winows 8 and IE10 are both new to me so getting my head round both at the same time is a bit of a nightmare. At least I can control the beast with a mouse instead of using the touchscreen! ———-Stuart

The answer is not to use Windows 8. On the rare occasions I have to use Windows I stick to XP, it does't have all the bloatware!

Hi Stuart, I know it is of not much help but I recently use Windows 8 and IE 10 and have the same problem. If you find a solution please let me know.

                          No it isn't.

This reply is using Windows 8 and Internet Explorer 10 and it works just fine.
Shift + Return from the above line = no gap.

Return on its own = a gap.

Mmmm – Win 8 is the HP installed OS on the new PCsimply because it enpowers the built in touch screen. Alright, I don't use the touch screen but I have paid for the MS OS license and I want my moneysworth. So for now the workaround is to copy and paste from Word until I find a solution. Thank you Russell for pointing out that it works OK on your Win 8 / IE10 machine – theres hope for this old bloke yet. ATB Stuart

                              Hello John Shepherd.

Thank you for calling my attention to this.

I also don't know if other people has the same difficulty to read my messages using that font.
I know can read it without difficulty (and I have vision problems…).

I use that font in my messages because I write my messages in LibreOffice Writer (part of a Open source and free package) and then copy and paste it to the forum editor. And I configured LibreOffice to use Comic Sans MS font by default.

I can, however, and ever I remember it, use the same font with a little larger size like I do in this very message.

Please let me know if this benefits your reading.

                              Best regards

                                Hi Dias

It is easier to read in the larger size, but does take up a lot of room.

I have just realised that the problem with reading your posts is on my Ipad. The font displayed is definitely not comic sans and is more like a handwritten scipt similar to the 'Edwardian Script' font.

It displays fine as comic sans MS on Windows.
I have tried to cut and paste into this post to show what the problem is but it reverts to this standard font.

                                    Dias,

You may be interested to know that the HTML for this page shows your chosen font as

                                    <font face="Comic Sans MS, cursive">

The plain version of "Comic Sans MS" is very legible; but I have to agree with John Shepherd, that the cursive version is rather difficult to read.

                                      John,

                                      Thanks for mentioning the iPad

… I have dug a little deeper and found this useful explanation.

… The short paragraph directly under Font Family explains all.

iPad cannot display "Comic Sans MS", so it picks the the next on the list, which is "cursive".

                                      Dangerous stuff, HTML

                                      MichaelG.

                                      .

Just to clarify my earlier post … it's not a "cursive version" of "Comic Sans MS" that we are finding difficult to read; it's the iPad's default/generic cursive font; which it appears to be substituting.

It looks like the iPad is using "Snell Roundhand" as its generic "cursive"

… if you have a look at that font, I think you will appreciate our difficulty.

I was blissfully unaware of these font conversion and allied problems reading ME/MEW through firefox on winXP
I nevertheless went digging to try and understand the problem and found Firefox, tools, options, content, fonts and colors, advanced.
In there there is a tick box for "Allow pages to choose their own fonts". and with that ticked (the default) I get a uniform font for all the postings on this site. when I untick it all sorts of odd fonts appear in postings which I would not pretend to be able to recognise or relate to any of them but the readable becomes illegible.

It may not help many but its another area to explore that seems to control the displayed font.
