I have been clearing out a friends workshop lately.

I came across some unusual ER collets, and wondered if anyone knew what it might be for.

      They are ER32 series.

      They have only 6 "blades"

The inside diameter is ringed all the way down

It has a cap head bolt and longish nut on the bottom.

      Photos of the 16mm size.

      many thanks

The rings in the bore are said to enhance the grip. The threaded end could be used to provide a depth stop, but due to the design, not 100% repeatable.

I never would have guessed they were for holding a cutter with a threaded shank, very different from the common threaded shank cutters.

                  Thanks for your replies.

The collet is marked "ER" and "SS", as well as the size.

I too had wondered if the cap head screw on the end was to set a dead length, but it has no lockout.

It fits my ER32 collet holder wel

Likely belt and braces to stop any screwed end mills screwing/unscrewing further? Only two threads would be needed for that – the end mill and the screw.

Or perhaps the collet would not prevent plain-shank cutters from sliding in further under load and the screw may be sufficient to prevent this, even without a locknut as the collet nut will close slightly on tightening, pinching the screw?

As it is only good for one size of cutter, not too useful for work-holding (compared to a full/proper ER collet), I would suggest. For the cost of collets, they would likely be pensioned off if mine (but left in a drawer somewhere!).

Schaubulin EFTX, the thread is to hold appropriate cutters. Not for depth stop.

                      .

Aside from the innocent typo, Barrie is evidently correct ^^^

I would like to see a picture of the cutters designed for these collets.

In my early days of using ER collets in my milling machine I did notice the milling cutter could slip into the collet holder sometimes, probably I hadn't got the collet properly tightened, but these collets could be a belt and braces approach.

As I said they fit my ER 32 holder, and I have a range of sizes so i will try them out next time i have some milling to do.

And so back to riveting tender hornblocks to the frames on 3.1/2 gauge County Carlow.

I would imagine that the collets were designed to accept standard ‘threaded cylindrical shank’ cutters.
