I am building LBSC's Bat O gauge loco. I am trying to work out the best way to connect up the tender water pump to the loco, the suggested method is to use 1/8" copper pipe with a couple of coils in it, this is proving impractical as the Meth's sump and connection pipe are in the way and the annealed copper pipe is too stiff. The instructions are very vague and do not give the position of the union connection on the engine.

The cycle pump connection method looks impractical too.

As the plans are from the 1940's is there a better method these days?

In hindsight it would have been better to put the sump behind the front tender axle instead of in front to give more room for the connections but it is too late to do that now.

Could you use push-fit pressure fittings and PTFE tube as on page 37 of Just The Ticket's (mainly gauge 1) catalogue?

I have used braided flexible fuel pipe as used on out board motors. Clamp rings were made from 8mm copper end feed fittings, These fit closely over the fuel pipe, one fitting can be cut to make three rings. to connect to the model make fittings with a rat tail, to insert into the fuel pipe. Slide a ring on the pipe over the inserted tail. To clamp the connection, Make a clamping tool. A piece of 1/4"MS, say 1" square, drill a hole in the centre, The same size as the ring next find a couple of dowel pins say 1/16dia, drill through the block for the dowels on one side of the block at 5/8" centres. finally saw to cut the block in half, each half having two dowel holes and half of the central hole. Assemble the clamp block over the pipe and close the joint between vice jaws. This should result in the ring being compressed into the fuel pipe and having a pair of ears at the sides.

Originally these were on a 3 1/2" black five  and are probably too heavy for the smaller model

              Thank you for your replies.

I will try the pipe and clamps as I now have some silicone tube with 2mm wall thickness and with some 8mm copper pipe I can make the clamping rings and luckily I have a suitable crimping tool form my electronic days. I have since found nylon and silicone small bore tubing for pressure use available in small quantities in a range of colours at low postage cost from: http://www.advancedfluidsolutions.co.uk

I will also look into "Enots" fittings.

The yellow air line tube is very flexible and available in small diameters
