New book that will interest shaper owning folk or those with an armchair interest.

Kay Fisher has just published a re-edited compendium of the 160 or so articles he wrote for the NEMES Gazette.

        Self published via Lulu.com **LINK**

I got the electronic version via Apple Bookstore for £2.99 which seemed good value for a few hours reading. Proper book versions are print on demand so not sure about prices and delivery to UK. (From what I've seen print on demand usually seems to be quoted in the £20 – £30 range. But I've never bought any books that way.)

          Thanks for that, Clive

I've just bought it via Apple … it looks a bargain, at significantly less than the cost of one magazine.

              Are you sure ?

The Lulu page seems to indicate otherwise: **LINK**

As Michael says. It is available in "epub" format which is the standard for most book readers ie Kindle. Apps are available for Android tablets and a good free reader / library program for PC is Calibre which works well.

That's a useful link, thanks Ian yes

But I don't begrudge £2.99 for the ability to read it all off-line

Thank you, gentlemen. I'll try again.

PS Having done so I see that, not for the first time, I didn't scroll down far enough; my earlier comment was based on clicking on the Apple link.

Up to page 656. Shaper books are about as fascinating as watching one work. I really don't have time for all this reading between jobs!

Reckon the three columns (41 – 43) on shaper tools from page 320 to 370 or thereabouts plus the little picture of an angled grinding support on page 518 towards the end of column 54 (Ludwig Gack shaper) are worth the book price. Probably the simplest and most straightforward exposition of basic tool grinding for amateur folk I've ever seen. Although figuring out the shearing tool grind from photos and diagrams is challenging. Its actually dead simple once seen in the flesh (metal!) but on paper it just seems wrong.

Unfortunately still no easy way of generating a nice radius shown. Something desirable on all tools but most essential with the shearing tool. Although I can do such by hand just fine one day I'll figure something simple out just for the crack of it.

                        Clive.

Print on demand doesn't really work out more expensive than other books, although the author gets a fair bit of latitude in setting the price.

My self-published 'Home Workshop Dictionary' at 257 pages is £11 and the shorter but large format (A4) Norden and Fradley Canal Crane books are £8 in paperback.

I've just downloaded a copy for £3.55 using Paypal as the payment method.

On Windows 10, the ebook just opens with a native Windows reader.

Also downloaded Calibre, as mentioned above, and that opens it fine as well.

The one issue is that my AV program, Avast Free, tried to block the install.

No idea how good the contents are, as I've not read it yet.
