      Thanks to a long anticipated visit from the PPI fairy last weekend I have been celebrating. There are some long overdue jobs for the house, a scan of the dog and a long-overdue holiday among other needs, but I've been able to get stocked up on various consumables like glue and hacksaw blades, but also two long overdue essentials for the workshop.

      One is a basic linisher/rotary sander from Machine Mart (also sold by almost everyone else!) Sold as Clarke Woodworker it does a really smart job of tidying up steel, so my QCTP now looks a bit better finished!

      The other one is a 400W Jaguar Cub inverter and motor package from Transwave. It will be interesting to see the effect this has on my mini-lathe, but I will be giving it a total strip-down, clean and setup so the refurb process may take a while.

      Apparently others have followed this path, but there seem to be no reports of what happened to them on their journey into the unknown!

      I'll use this thread to report progress.

          What is the PPI Fairy? From context I gather you received some funds somehow, but no idea what the PPI reference means.

            Hi Neil,

            Your VFD project sounds interesting, I have a lathe that I plan to put a 3-phase motor and inverter on. I am looking forward to hear about your rebuild.

              PPI = Payment Protection Insurance

              This was intended to pay off credit cards, and the like, in the event of being unable to work, or being made redundant. However, it was often sold without the knowledge of the punter, or sold to those who were excluded from claiming, such as the self-employed and retired. The banks are now being forced to compensate those who were incorrectly sold PPI. In typical fashion a whole raft of new con artists have appeared, offering to apply for compensation on behalf of the customer in return for a chunk of the compensation, irrespective of whether the customer actually had PPI or not in some cases.

              Regards,

              Andrew

                Pleased to say I have helped family members recoup a fair bit of PPI. One of my stepsons didn't know he had ever had any, until the bank wrote and told him he may have been mis-sold.

                I should mention that I also bought a 'Model Engineer/MEW' mug as they are on clearance with Myhobbystore right now!

                A smaller purchase was a tilting vice from Warco at just £28. A lot of metal for the money, and much better (and not as roughly made) as the really cheap ones. Unfortunately it is much huger than I expected!
