Today I fitted a a box I built into the rear of my company van to give me two accessory sockets, one is wired direct to the live twelve volts and the other socket is supplied via a voltage detected relay which wont switch on until the voltage reaches a set level allowing the battery to be charged first and when you switch off the ignition it shuts down allowing me to leave an electric cool box connected but not draining the battery, all parts were bought via the internet, I just bolted them all together.

Later in the afternoon I nipped over to my local ALDI to collect a constant 1600 watt, max 2000 watt load inverter generator which runs really silent and is to be used to charge my mobility scooter batteries, without disturbing the other campers, when attending the Dorset steam fair in August with one of my engines.

Martin – surely you should be adapting a Suffolk Dredging Tractor into a steam powered scooter (that would be popular down the supermarket)

More seriously I've spent ages working out and rewiring the dual circuits in three different campervans. The only thing you can be sure of is that the wiring in any second hand van WILL be bodged! Choc-boxes are your friend!

            Neil,

Its a good job then that my van, company supplied, is brand new with only 7000 miles on the clock laugh I've connected my box of tricks into a existing 20 amp live feed at the rear of the van so no bodging required. I have a very helpful MD, I can use the van for my hobby as long as its fit for purpose on Monday mornings.

Didnt understand the bit about the tractor though.

I've just been force-fed polenta. My daughter bought some to find out what it's like.Assuming it was fine couscous I microwaved some and added butter, tasted OK but smelled faintly of burnt rubber. Apparently I should grill or fry it.

But I will take your suggestion, there's a box of magnum-a-likes in the fridge.

                              Hi Mike

To relate that to todays values I calculate that £16000 in 1780 ( a guess at his d.o.b.) would be worth about one and a quarter million Australian dollars today !

That should set up a nice workshop and leave some over for a tinny or two!

                              Cheers!

Norman's figure is correct if you do the RPI calculation, but the value that gives can be somewhat misleading because what can be bought, the cost of labour, and the relative distribution of wealth across society have all changed significantly over the years.

Compared with the average Englishman your ancestor was a rich man. A Gentleman didn't have to work for a living and his money probably came from rents and/or investments. The "economic status" value of his £16000 in 1800 would be equivalent to over £20,000,000 today. That's about $40M AUD.

It would be interesting to find out where the money went. Quite a few of the Gentleman class were heavy gamblers, or perhaps you're the missing heir to half of central London!

                                    Cheers,

In pre-industrial days the 'gentry' are/were those of elevated class – landholders, senior cleric and some of the well-educated etc. who still were a rung below the titled classes (lords & ladies etc.) Technically a 'gentleman' was the lowest rank of the gentry in a society that was obessed with social position and a good example might be the 'gentleman farmer' who owned his own estate and owed his status and much of his worth to that.

Hi, well on a lighter note, today I had to go south to Hitchin to deliver some consumable kit for a customer, for their shoot blasting process, that I've been fabricating at work all this week, made for a fairly easy last day of the week.

                                          Regards Nick.

I've found that Lidl 47p mouthwash has made a huge difference and partake of it 2 or 3 times a day. So far mouth ulcers and morning sore throats have become an annoyance of the past

Staying away from the Dentist helps a lot as well.

I wish I had stayed away in the 70s, all my problems arew with teeth filled in the days when any sign of anything meant a filling. All the teeth that escaped unfilled are still intact now.
