Yesterday actually. Made bushes for friction shock absorbers. Lignum vitae is particularly satisfying to turn giving a lovely silky finish. It's almost a shame to hid them at the end of a shock absorber😊Bush.jpg

I machined off the cast iron blade guides for my new to me Startrite bandsaw (wood) to a new surface. These old machies were often in schools and now let loose for hobyists but well worn. For us machining the guides is trivial but quite daunting or expensive for a woodworker so if you know anyone with one do them a favour and do it for them.

The back guide is supposed to be a rod with a carbide button but mine are mild steel with many grooves worn in seemingly original as it is the oldest model. Looked at the price of 10mm carbide rod and decided to give HSS a go and see how it wears.

I may make roller guides someday as per modern practice but actually the CI guides allow blade support to within a few mm of the job for better accuracy.

Next job is to make a mitre fence. Have you seen the price! There's simple ally casting and extrusion versions at over £100.

When I was involved in boat building the blade quides on the bandsaws, Wadkin, Startrite, Record etc. were all lignum vitae. I still have a small stash ready for when I next need something as hard bur self lubricating.

I will have to check it on the computer, later.

Somewhat infuriatingly, if I try it on the iPad, it instructs me to download Adobe Flash Player [which is, of course, impossible under iOS]

… I wonder why people can't just put this stuff up as a pdf or a web page.

              Absolutely right Michael!

Mind you whether its Cromwell or Apple that should be blamed here is debatable.

I find the Cromwell 'interactive' e brochure unusable on my PC. They show whole brochure page in a rectangle on a waste of space blank background. Zooming and panning is possible but its not practical for 30 or so pages.

Do these people never ask their customers for an opinion!!!

Last night I made a windy, windy handle for the spindle to make single point close threading that much easier, come on, we have all done it, used the chuck key to rotate the chuck (nightmare when the chuck loosens!). Ended up being made all from stainless, I didn't plan it that way but the offcuts I had in the right size were all stainless, even the threaded bar. Handle was from a C3 though.

so then this morning I rewarded myself with a trip to the range, drilling the 12mm plate on the right was pretty straightforward but the 15mm plate on the left is proving obstinate. Need to give 'em a bit more vim methinks and try again

Decided that I have to stop trying to make batches of axles without the aid of stops on my lathe cross slide and compound slide. + here – there it all adds up and I really want them all the same.

Has anyone made an adjustable stop for the cross slide on a 5" boxford?

Brian, use the standard Boxford screwcutting stop but with a screw that has a very clean and positive shoulder set to stop at dead centre. Then make distance pieces to drop in between the screw and the bridge piece. (this may seem meaningless to some but shoud be clear to a Boxford user)

Overtook Dinmore Manor on the M25 about J18 at 7pm this evening. A friend saw some other loco on the road about there yesterday but I was some 10 mins later so missed that one.

With the lathe still with WARCO for repair attempt no. 2 I am restricted to non turning work.

I have a pile of tool steel "dog ends" I have collected over the years and I felt today that the time was right to make a holder for them.

I have made it double ended so it can be used for tiddly boring bits etc.

It kept me busy for a few hours and stopped me pining for my absent friend.

Learned quit a lot about how not fit an oil-seal, but got there in the end. A bit worrying was a nicely polished worn groove, where the inboard seal runs. Should have got a photo, but forgot. Hopefully it has done the job. Headstock now refilled and will be watching the level.

Smashing action shot Andy. I couldn't help noticing the back tyre looks a bit soft, is this a deliberate ploy to get more "off-road" grip or a puncture developing? I also noticed easy access to the foot pump strapped to the toolbox on the running board!

Martin, that's exactly right. The trick is to get the tyre pressure low enough to get maximum grip but high enough to stop the tyre rotating on the rim. We then have to pump the pressure up to go on the public road to drive to the next section.

                                                    Fun though.

Went to see one of my cousins girls, Ruby is five months pregnant and before she became pregnant, weighed in at a little over 1000 lbs. You really wouldn;t want her to stand on your toes!

Hand feeds and actually responds to her name, a huge beast. Very impressive and they are more pets than "just cattle" you can see from their condition (he has two, mother and daughter) that they are spoiled.
