Hi All, why does every different micrometer manufacturer have different ratchet tensions?
Some have no ratchet, some have parts missing and broken, some are light touch, some are heavy, some have friction types. There doesn’t seem to be any set standard. Measure by hand feel, then ratchet it and its 1 thou out. Of the 70 odd that I’ve got, no 2 are really the same. I’m a feeler, can’t risk making something for the bin. Graeme.

Can’t say I have ever used then – just develop a “feel” for the force being applied.

Just takes a bit of practice on measuring something of known size like a gauge block or 1-2-3 block.

IIRC the ratchet was an option for some makers.
