Approximately 20 or so years ago someone exhibited a 7 plank wagon in the annual ME exhibition. It was unpainted and an absolutely splendid bit of engineering, showing, as it did, every possible detail. I cannot remember if it was a completion entry or in the display class and nor can I remember if it was 5” or 7 1/4” gauge. Can anyone place it enough to say what year it was, and if it was mentioned, or even written, up in the magazine of the time?

3991 mentions a 7 plank one in the exhibition, not in my collection though.

Than you JasonB. Regrettably not an edition that is immediately obvious in my collection either. I lost a couple of volumes when the bookbinders at St Albans went up in smoke. It looks like that volume was one of them. I will have to get round to sorting all my loose back issues out and get some more bound up.

You are probably remembering Alan Crossfield's 1 1/16" scale seven-plank coal wagon.

It was first exhibited at the 63rd International Model Engineer & Modelling Exhibition held at Olympia in December 1993 / January 1994 when it was awarded a Silver Medal. A picture and brief description appear in ME No. 3964 of the 4th March 1994.

It was again exhibited at the 64th International Model Engineer & Modelling Exhibition held at Olympia in December 1994 / January 1995 . A picture and brief description appear in ME No. 3988 of the 3rd. March 1995.

Alan's wagon was however, painted, and you may also be remembering another picture of a 7 plank wagon that appeared in ME 3991 of 21st April 1995 in a report on model engineering societies in North Wales. That was under construction and unpainted.
