Retracting tool-holders and built in cross slide pull back devices are by far the best methods to withdraw the tool from the work when screwcutting without loosing track of things.
Unfortunately such luxuries are relatively rare in the ME / Home Shop community.
The zero-2-zero thread cutting technique can be used on any machine with re-settable dials with fairly similar advantages. It is an angular in-feed method where the top slide is set over to the thread angle, slightly less in practice, and used to apply the feed. The cross slide merely sets the tool position for cutting or return.
1) Start by bringing the work to size, fit the threading tool, move the top-slide to an appropriate in-feed angle and use the cross slide to bring the tool up to touch the work
2) Set both top and cross slide dials set to zero.
3) Pull the cross slide back a bit, move the saddle along past the end of the workpiece and feed the cross slide past zero to the depth of the thread you intend to cut.
4) Re set the cross slide to zero.
5) It will be evident that with both slides on zero the cut is to the final dimensions of the thread.
6) Pull back the top slide to gain clearance then move it forwards for the depth of the first cut.
7) Take the cut with the cross slide on zero, move it back enough to clear the thread for the return pass.
8) Having cleared the work, move the cross slide back to zero, apply the next cut using the top slide and take the cut.
9) Repeat until both slides read zero and all the spring cuts are out.
10) You have now cut the thread to the depth you first set.
Which may not actually be correct if the shape of your tool tip differers from that given in the book for the official thread depth.
I suspect that model engineers home ground threading tools tend to be a bit too pointed, so you may need to deepen things with an extra cut or three for clearance.
Works an absolute treat with chasers or full form inserts. Right first time, every time with my Johannesson / SKF sets.
No need to set the top-slide exactly to the thread angle or do the trigonometry to convert thread depth to angular in-feed (Aaaargh, Nooo, not trig, this is supposed to be fun) the lathe effectively does all the maths. My top slides are normally set to 25° which works fine for almost everything as well as being ready to go when I need to thread.
Main disadvantage is that, as with all angular in-feed methods the tool feeds forward as well as inwards so a slightly longer relief groove is needed at the end to accommodate thread runout.
Sounds complicated but its actually very fast in use once you have the set up steps nailed down.
If you use multiple tooth chasers whether bought or home made by fixing old coventry die head chasers onto a suitable holder (I welded one for a special) run out grooves become impossible so you have to pull the tool clear before dropping the half nut. The zero-2-zero method makes sorting ou the next cut much eaiser than the other methods.
