Machining the flywheel

Hello,

I'm looking for help as to the best way to machine the flywheels on a Stuart Victoria Twin. It has been suggested to me that they are machined together. Can anyone give me assistance as to how to go about doing this? I would appreciate any suggestions.

I would machine one side of each flat, both rim and hub, so the two will join back to back.

Then drill a hole and counter bore in each of the "lumps" where the spoke meets the rim for say M3 cap head screws. Drill and tap mating holes in the other flywheel and assemble with a dab of loctite.

Fill the screw heads with something like JBWeld and then treat it as a single flywheel.

I don't like to see the Stuart flywheels left with these lumps on them so would suggest counterboring quite deep and then the lumps can be turned away as you machine the rest.

The other alternative is to go for a single spoked flywheel, one of the heavy 8" jobs from RDG would do nicely.

Edit worth tracking down the ME series Princess Royal and Goliath by Tubal Cain where he modified the Stuart single and twin, dont have it in my collection, No 3742 is the one you want for the flywheel.

3 listed on e-bay, two at £1 ea just search "model engineer 3742"

I assume he used two flywheels its a long time since I read the article in the college libruary.

Any forum members got this issue to check what he did please

Pretty much like wot JasonB said, except that he permanently joined the two halves with six countersunk 1/8" rivets, the 'heads' of which were skimmed during subsequent machining.
