sink fitting help

Hi , Im putting a new sink in for my mother ,this one :

As you can see it came with the tap and tails for underneath.

My mind is getting confused as to what i need to connect it up.

Ive fitted waste traps before but this one seems backwards as usually on the ones ive fitted the trap underneath just screws onto the bit under the plug hole. It says in on the webpage 45mm waste connection.40mm waste pipe fits into the hole if thats any use.

What i want to know is what type of trap do i fit as it already has a plastic nut on it????

The other thing is the tails ive used before are usually a male threaded end that connects to a standard tap connector underneath which always usually have a female nut on. ?????

Help please.

I think you need to put in a short length of 40mm pipe as that is a compression fitting on the bottom of the waste outlet. You can then fit a "P" trap either shallow or standard to the pipe stub. The 10mm (presumably or possibly 1/4"bsp) male end of the tail should screw in directly to the new tap base. The female end will fit the end of a 15mm compression ( or soldered on ) to 1/2 bsp stud straight connector on the 15mm copper water pipes. If you need to connect to a standard old fashioned 1/2" bsp tap you have the wrong tail. You will need one with 1/2" bsp female on each end.

Did you not get a bag with some other bits in?, these wastes usually come with their own trap and a few bits for connecting things like dishwashers, The first bit goes into that compression socket. Used to get them on Ikea sinks and franke do similar. Personally I tend to bin them and use one with a standard 1.5" male thread which will take the usual loose nut on a P or S trap. Our waste pipe is too loose in that compression nut.

The two large 1/2" BSP nuts will fit onto a 1/2" x 15mm fitting. Don't be tempted to screw it onto a compression fitting as the 1/2" end has a flat edge to the thread for the washer to seal against not the sharp edge due to the taper for an olive

Thanks , if i fit a small piece of pipe 40mm , how do i fix the female nut screw end of a standard trap onto the pipe??

Also wondered if the large plastic nut already on there already could be removed and a waste trap could then just screw on ? Or are the threaded nut on the top of a standard trap likely to be a different size?

Problem is these days there is a mix of 1.5" and 40mm fittings. You can get an adaptor to join the 2 but you may have to search for it. As JasonB says it might be simpler to go to Wickes or B&Q and get a standard sink waste then every thing will fit together. I do not think your standard trap will fit the waste.   regards

Pipework is now all 40mm or 32mm and if threaded then that is 1.5" BSP or 1.25" BSP or G thread as they call it in Europe, don't get any 1.5" waste.

I have 15mm copper pipe and 40mm waste pipe and a load of various solder ring fittings but with have to buy the bits Jason suggests. Havent bought a bottle trap yet. Problem is i dont really want it too long other wise the waste pipe will be going uphill.

I suspect Sauber who made the sink and tap are German.

Hi Mark is this any use to you? It's under my sink and looks similar to yours, although mine is a one and a quarter sink. The trap (out of shot) is screwed to the pipe going to the left, it is actually on a slight angle but has worked just fine for the last 13 years. You could probably screw the trap directly on the thread where mine has the bend. Your little plastic bush thing looks like a spigot for a washing machine, this usually fits in the outlet which you can see on mine is blanked off, because the washing machine is on a separate system.

You bought the items from Plumbworld and they are usually very good. I think there should be more parts than you have, I would phone them and check, I'm sure they'll help. All the sinks I've fitted come with a complete waste system, which you usually have to adjust to the layout you want, and it's not uncommon to have bits left over that you don't actually need. Seems daft to go and buy bits on a trial and error basis.

I should have added that the two tap tails, I usually fit direct to isolator valves. Dead easy as they just screw together. Makes life easier for future maintenance and they are really cheap from Toolstation etc.

Thanks for all the help and suggestions i think i have an idea of what im doing now.

Ian yes it looks similar but without the side waste connector.

I have ordered the two 15mm x 1/2" connectors that jason suggested which will hopefully come by saturday afternoon.

RMA, there wasnt anything else with the sink/tap . I will proably just go to toolstation for any extra stuff i need as i want to get it done this weekend and would probably be next week if there was anything missing from the plumbworld order.

You can always turn down the sharp edge on a lathe

 

The missing part is a flat, hard rubber disc to block off the overflow neck. Putting an appliance that close to the sink can cause waste water to enter the sink or even spit it in you face.

Doesn't that step down the outlet so you can fit an ordinary trap with a compression fitting at the top?

If all else fails, self amalgamating tape is your friend

But solvent weld pipe is slightly bigger than push fit, at least in the nominal 40mm

I think 1/2 BSP female is intended to be fitted to a 15mm isolator service valve on the 15mm copper pipe, these are available in various configurations so make sure you get the correct one. For the trap/sink waste you can buy a short plastic pipe with a male thread at one end, just cut to length, fit the plain end into your waste then the trap fits as normal.
