This box of large carbide cutting tips was given to me donkey's years ago, and they've sat in their box ever since because I can't think of a use for them. They are 3/4" square and 1/4" thick – clearly heavy industrial tooling of some sort. Any suggestions for a use?

          Chris,

You could make a scraper handle to hold them – rather like the excellent Sandvik one. (Let me know if you don't know that and I'll see if I can find a reference to it, failing which I could send you a photo of mine.)

          David

Edit: just found this reference – plenty more if you Google "sandvik scraper". The tips are £33 each!

Hadn't thought of that sort of scraper, I made a deburring tool by mounting two circular tips next to each other, for taking the burr off both sides of the edge of sheet metal. Ian S C

I use a recycled file as a scraper – not something I use very often I have to admit.

Well, these things are free (bar postage cost – and you'd be surprised how heavy they are) to a good home if anyone wants/can use them.

Might be a bit precarious but if your toolpost will take say – 12-14mm tool shanks you might be able to grip one of these and turn with it. A kevlar vest and crash helmet might help as well kulou Rik

                  Chris,

I suppose I ought to put my money where my mouth (finger?) is; put me down for one please. PM me a mail cost and I'll send you a cheque – or PayPal if convenient.

                  Thanks, David

PS – you should try a carbide scraper some time, if you have a significant amount to do; they need far less sharpening than a HS steel one.

One? it's all or none my friend I'm not about to use 7 envelopes to send them all out individually thus contributing to Royal Mail's profits more than I have to. YHPM.
