Oil or paint or what

My current project is Boxhill in 5" gauge and I have just completed the chassis which looks wonderful and shiny except for the bits of rust that have started. I could coat it in primer but this would get scratched or I could oil it and get me and everything else messy or I could keep the emery close to hand or what? Thoughts or preferences chaps?

Keep it in a box with Vapour Phase Inhibitor (VPI) rust inhibitor canister or wrap in rust preventative paper?
