watching a video on the tube it showed a clip of this picture which may or may not be part of the machine shop for “airfix” either way it’s interesting, worth a look.

        Paul,

I happened to watch that same video a couple of weeks ago and, like you, I paused on that picture of the workshop. It looks like there are a number of shapers in use.

I think that YT channel uses AI for production – no human presenter, speech tempo never changes, small amount of Subs/views, and it’s first video only appeared about 1 month ago.

I try hard to avoid ‘AI slop’ but unfortunately I sometimes get caught. The Airfix story was interesting but, knowing it is AI generated, I’m wary about the ‘facts’ it presented.

A friend has also got caught by that same site’s Ferranti story….again some interesting stuff there but having first hand knowledge of the story we could spot the flaws.

Hi Ches, I have got to the point that if it’s newer than about 2 months and counting It will get about 1 minute to convince me that it is not AI. The speech, the subtitles, many use a 1000 words when 10 would do and repeat the “facts ” countless times – in case I’ve got bored or lost interest. Then there’s the pictures, many quite irreverent, often having NOTHING to do with the subject.  There may be a few interesting points but largely their just a vehicle for more adverts !

The world we live in ? Or is it just me ?   Noel.

I agree Noel, that endless silly chatter is a total- pain-in-the-arse.

I no longer watch any of that stuff.

I agree with the AI stuff too much of it on the tube, But it’s still an interesting picture tough.

I copied the image and enlarged it and used Tin Eye to give it the once over.

                It turns out it’s –

2015.14.2.. Photograph Album: WWII Castle Bromwich Aeroplane Factory, Birmingham 1940-46. Manufacturers: Vickers Armstrong. From album containing approximately 50 black and white photographs. Including Castle Bromwich Aeroplane Factory, and other factories across the country, during the Second World War.

So not Airfix, I thought it was odd with 6 shapers operating, in a die shop?

Looks like a rough and chip-strewn, oily place – since that’s what shapers do, but I love the White shirts, rolled up to do the job of the day, the Black Tie under the work overall … somehow the pride in dress flowed into the work and job as well.  And then as Safety and Health, bright lights, shorter work days and the rest took over, all the early ethics and pride went with the disappearance of the factory…How many of the factories, or factory descendants , mentioned by Howardb hint of an existence today? Seems the world’s progress is these days measured by how many get ensnared by Meta and Google. Wonderful old photos those.

Good find. Many of these would have been shadow factories, setup or repurposed specifically for the war effort. Castle Bromwich survived into peacetime, the factory became part of the motor industry and at least some of the site is still in operation today. If you are ever in the UK then the aircraft factory shed at Brooklands Museum is worth a visit.
