Calling folk that have made the HH grinding rest.

I've made a mistake on a part. Part 4, lower slide. In the book some of the dimensions are sideways on, in other words you have to turn the book or your head to read them.

Anyway I read the measurement of the 5.2 mm hole as 9mm from the top. Its clear now that it should have been 6mm. Too late, I drilled a lovely 5.2mm hole all the way through at 9mm from the top.

I really don't want to start again, so is it viable to simply add 3mm to part 16 and to make the slot in part four 3mm deeper, ie 15mm not 12mm??.

          Hello Wolfie.

I made an HH grinding rest.
After making it I made various modifications and improvements we can talk about if you are interested.
Now answering your question: I think you may continue with that accidental "modification" but, you have to consider modifications to the size of items 15 and 16, alter the centre of the B hole and also the deepness of the oval bind hole so the items 15 and 16 (after modification) have enough spoce (maybe 15mm deep?). If I were in your place I think I would replace all the M8 holes for the locking handles with M6 holes. In my opinion the effort supported by the locks doesn't justify the M8 size. Along these same line (apparently…) Mr. Harold Hall did a proposal to lower the thickness of the side arms (items 20 – see, please, **LINK**).

You can find here **LINK** some pictures of my grinding rest that may have some useful information.

          Best regards

What would I need to do to part 16?? Is it not just 15 I need to consider? I already noted the 15mm depth of the oval slot.

As for the other mods, I have already made most of the locking handles but I also constructed it with the thinner side arms as per the revised plan.

              Hello Wolfie.

I am sorry i mislead you. You don't need to modify items 15 and 16.
This morning I dismantled my grinding rest and I could see I was wrong.

              Best regards

                Hey Wolfie

i also made the grinder rest from Harolds book, followed it to the letter and all worked fine as it should do and as was expected.
havent made anything useable from any type of material since the bunny shaped letter holder in woodwork in high school back in the 70s smile p

others have made it and made it out of sequence and run into trouble with locking mechanisms not fitting or getting in the way and such like but if they had simply followed the book then it would have been all OK

i think i made the same mistake as you though and also buggered up the slot in that piece too

so i -did- start that piece again, and was happy that i did
so why not do the same? its not a massive piece with a huge amount of work involved. you'll be happy that you did in the end

just follow the plan and instructions. no need to modify anything to get it to work. it works just fine and does exactly what you think it will do

make the piece again, you know its the right thing to do cheeky
