Actually Jason I have never quoted a height for the packing shown on my photographs, I think now that I should have done. However, thinking about it, spindle height is the better measurement that I should give. Something to add to the website. I have been to the workshop to measure the arrangement I have and the grinder spindle is at 6-1/4 in.
This value Brett is far from critical but looking back on the times I have used it getting the rest low enough was more likely to be a problem than raising up to a higher level.
I would therefore take that dimension as a minimum and suggest anywhere between 6-1/4" and 7-1/2" would be a good value to aim at. As Jason says add some packing if you are lower than that.
Are you aware that on my website there are two pages that show modifications that are worth considering, though by no means essential. There are also pages on using it for numerous sharpening tasks.
I have detailed some of these elsewhere on the forum but if you would like I can quote them here to make it all in one place for you.
I am sorry, I keep forgetting to ask which one you are making, from which book or MEW issue.
