Masks are relatively useless. Chances of you standing in front of a carrier as they cough or sneeze and you breathing in droplets are lower than your chance of winning the lottery. Its those droplets landing and sitting on surfaces that you then touch that is the problem. Hand washing is the best defence.

Sadly I would disagree, I have a part time delivery job for a local chemist and the counter girls are constantly "telling" customers in no certain terms fo stop coughing and sneezing at them, one of the girls almost has a permanent cold through the winter.

I don't understand what all the media/public fuss is all about. NO deaths from corona virus in uk yet, but what about the deaths from flu in the uk since christmas. If people new there would be less panic.

ordinary flu kills hundreds of thousands in the world every year, yet there is no panic, it seems to be accepted that flu related deaths are unavoidable, and it is the result of pnuemonia that gets most people due to other health and age issues. This is why we have the seasonal flu jab, to try and cut down the number of deaths/complications arising from such.

no need to panic, just use common sense – oh! dear…. Huston we have a problem!!!!!!!!

Figures quoted vary by source but 'ordinary' influenza death rates are quoted around 0.1% compared to WHO estimates on Corvid-19 of 3-4% (presumably lower where there is effective medical assist so say, 2% UK). Compare that to H5N1 claims as high as 60%. UK annual death figure is around a total of 600K folk croaking. If Corvid-19 went really wild with 1/2 population catching it then an additional 600K deaths – good news for funeral directors, bad news for pollution from crematoria. A bonus with lots more housing stock released, death taxes for the gov to spend and no-one left in care homes….
Government's only concern is the economy. Vulnerable folk croaking is good news so long as everyone else is spending……and they won't have the resources to treat high numbers of serious cases hence simply stating there is no treatment….

Its the customers who need to wear masks to stop droplets spraying on to surfaces and being picked up by the counter girls. Masks wont stop the girls touching infectious counter tops or money etc.

And the worst area for infection is the waiting room at the local surgery. No ventilation, heat turned up to the point of the tropics and coughing and spluttering, kids being the worst offenders. Often refer to ours as a plague pit. Have to attend twice a year (Reluctantly). Got the early January appointments moved to mid July.

            Regards Ian.

Best one ive heard so far is the coronavirus is caused by the new 5G phone network. They just rolled it out in Wuhan in December and on that infected cruise ship.

It was on the internet so it must be true.

Meanwhile in Australia after one coronavirus death, supermakets are sold out of toilet paper due to panic buying. Doomsday preppers Aussie style. The Yanks buy ammo, we buy TP.

There are very many types of face masks. Some of them are clearly effective or professionals wouldn’t need to use them. I wear one of the filter types in the workshop for a variety of tasks. As for the simple paper type I have to wonder why thousands of them are used by surgical staff every day if they’re of no use?

No plural for virus in Latin, English is, 'Viruses'.

It is a very long time ago but isn't virus a second declension noun in Latin so the plural would be viri perhaps?

Quite agree it is viruses in English.

                          Nick

my ‘shorter’ Latin dictionary (a miserable 50mm thick and 800+ pages) has ‘neuter’ noun , plural viri if I read their abbrev style correctly- “a poisonous liquid” or slimy liquid with gentler literary alternatives of strong smell or a sharp salt taste

One of the biggest carriers of virus is the supermarket trolley . I've seen children with running noses sitting in trolleys , wiping their noses with their hands and then holding onto to the trolley handle. I myself had a severe flue like virus after a visit to the super market. It took me 3 weeks to recover. I hadn't left the house for a period of over a week prior to this. With the corona virus I now use bacterial wipes to clean the handles and wear surgical gloves. Maybe a bit OTT, but for an 80 year old with a reduced immune system prevention is better than catching the virus.

It may look funny but I have had a blank split and a piece hit the face shield square on sure makes you jump but worth the money I paid for it
