        Hi,

When I get it up and running I will have a change gear set on my Harrison M300 that will comprise a combination of metal, fiber and Delrin gears.

Do I lubricate the set, and if I do, what do you more experienced machinists suggest I use.

I seem to remember reading somewhere that nylon should not be lubricated, is Delrin the same?

        Regards,

        Lee

My M300 has the original steel and Tufnol change gears. I give them an occasional squirt with ISO68 slideway oil as per the manual.

Delrin should not need lubrication buy shouldn't be harmed by lubrication either.

Nylon absorbs water and even the "Low" absobtion rated Nylon 6 or 6-6 does to a lesser extent. Tufnol should not be lubricated, it's a layered material.

              Regards Ian.

                Hi there, Ian,

                Are you suggesting possible delamination?

                Best regards,

Exactly this. As per page 8 of the user manual. Or rather ‘daily’, perhaps?

Henry Ford used layered tufnol for camshaft gears on millions of cars. Later he used macerated tufnol, and later still a type of nylon. No problems from engine oil.

Although the nylon teeth on V6 cam gears are a notorious week point…….

Sorry Gentlemen it,s the fiber gear I am more concerned about. It came from 600 group as it was an original gear but missing from my S/H machine.

For the price I expected a metal one….silly me! and then the lubrication advice in the manual would make sense and be followed.

Certain grades of Tufnol are used for propeller shaft bearings … totally immersed in, and lubricated by, water.
