I recall reading that we would need 4 planet earths if everyone lived like we do in the UK

… or 1/4 of the population. You choose. (Or Gaia might).

Another order arrived safely today, some ER collets from China. This time it took a couple of weeks so still not bad. It must be a coincidence but post Brexit orders from China seem to be getting here quicker! laugh

Simple, Vic – a half empty plane has room for post. So, order now and beat the ending of lockdown.

I’ve just noticed this on some items on eBay.

International Postage – items may be subject to customs processing depending on the item's customs value.

Sellers declare the item's customs value and must comply with customs declaration laws.

As the buyer, you should be aware of possible:

            delays from customs inspection.

import duties and taxes which buyers must pay.

brokerage fees payable at the point of delivery.

Your country's customs office can offer more details, or visit eBay's page on international trade.

Are eBay now no longer collecting VAT for HMRC?

Yes ebay still collecting VAT as far as I know, but Postage, Import duty, customs inspections and brokerage fees are separate items. If they apply they are in addition to VAT. There's no direct relationship between them and VAT.

Got a package from Canada last week through Amazon, where, by adjusting the UK price, Amazon UK collected VAT from me on behalf of the Canadian seller. The value and nature of the product meant there was no customs duty, but it could have been opened for inspection and it would have cost me had customs found an irregularity. (Naughty people often undervalue stuff to avoid paying duty and taxes. Even Model Engineers!)

Unless the financial hit would be severe, I'm content to cover the risk of extra charges, prepared to write-off up to about £100 should a transaction foul up. Any doubt about importing an expensive item would cause me to engage an expert – and pay 'brokerage fees'.

The system seems to be running like clockwork, Vic, and exactly as intended.

Well I have had a number of items from China without issue over the past few months. It’s just that I’ve never seen the International Postage notice I quoted. I’m sure this is relatively new and I can’t help wondering why.

It may be new [I don’t recall when I last checked]

… but the quoted text is not inconsistent with ebay collecting VAT.

If it's a true "Value Added" tax it ought to, by definition, apply on the final price including postage, handling, import duty and brokerage (although brokerage might be charged and taxed separately).

eBay collect VAT and selling fees on the postage included in the selling price.
