DAG Brown had a good series about sharpening drills by the 4 and 6 facet method. Later on he developed a better way (I think) to grind a drill. I can not find this artikel. Can anyone point me to the right M.E. number?

        Thanks.

An article by Derek Brown appeared in Model Engineer issue #4025 describing some additional jigs for the Quorn to facilitate "6 facet" sharpening.

            Thanks Emgee.

Yes, I have that article, but he had a later article on grinding drills using the same equipment.

Is this article on Model Engine News of assistance.

Personally I've been using the 4 facet method described in the Footnote.

I didn't build my Quorn myself, and wasn't able to achieve the 31° angle due to various bits fouling each other.
I recently bent a bar by 20° to hold the head at an angle; I'd intended 10° but got carried away.

I think grinding the drill is named "step rake". Anybody know the M.E. volum the article by Drown appeared?

It's difficult for me to find myself, as I'm not familiar with the article, but you may well find it mentioned on the Quorn iO group HERE

                    Yes, I found it!

"Further developments in drill sharpening" by D.A.G. Brown. M.E. vol 215 No 4513 page 184.

This is a superior way to grind a drill. Try it!

Originally, I wanted to make a Quorn, but it looked so complicated that I opted for a second hand only just started Worden.

Most of the time it is used, with a Hemingway kit, (plus my own accessories&nbsp for 4 facet drill grinding.

Reading the recent MEW reprint of Giles Parke's article on 4 facet grinding, I realised that using ER collets to hold drills for grinding was, like mine, one of his techniques.

It is also used for grinding lathe tools, (HSS and with a diamond wheel Carbide ) and have even been brave enough to try sharpening a couple of end mills.

The Worden is a less complicated machine, and so less versatile, than the Quorn, but is easier to make, and the accessories are simpler. So it satisfies my minimal needs.

D A G Brown makes a superb, and quick, job of 4 facet grinding on his Quorn, when you see him in action.

Quote: "However I seem to remember that amongst much commentary and even the book itself that the Quorn does not actually sharpen drills"

On page 113-114 in the Quorn book it is all explained. (4 facet method).

Howard, which edition was that in please?
I still have quite a pile of unread subscription copies.

I've just started the journey of tidying up me workshop, now it's relocated from a house move; current project is a full drill set re-sharpen of everything that needs it.
I've started at 7/8" and working down, from the MT2 to MT1 drills

For these larger sizes I'm using a No2 Reliance, which works well to provide the conventional conical rake; I'll swap to the No2 Reliance and maybe the genuine Picador as the size decreases.

Maintenance of 10mm and below, I've more recently been using the 4 facet method on the second hand Quorn I bought a while ago. I use J.Hugel's method for that, which seems to work well.
                          I linked to it earlier.
