      You don't need to make a new spindle, a simple expanding mandrel that will fit into the hole in the spindle will be enough to mount a suitable disc, bit of bent wire will do as a pointer and just put a clamp onto the spindle pully to lock the spindle.

      All you need then is a pointed tool mounted on its side to drag across the embrio handwheel and thats your graduation engraved, a couple of simple carrage stops will allow every tenth line to be engraved a bit longer will make things even easier

      A small ram pump run off an eccentric would also work. Couple of balls to act as valves then there is no risk of the liquid draining back down, this one on the right provides cooling water to a small IC engine that drips down a wire mesh screen and would be about the right size, think it was a 3/16" dia ram. The one on the left lifts fuel but may be a bit small though it could easily be scaled up a bit. A few moments with some brasso will add the required amount of blingwink 2

        Naturally I am now wondering ways to improve the headstock.If I keep this up I will never start anything for thinking of something new to plan!

         

        If I were to make a new spindle I could make it longer so that the indexing wheel and at some point in the future maybe the gears for screw cutting could be added. I could ream a standard MT 0 in the bore because I only have 1 adept  speacial taper centre and would like to have between centre turning. Might give it a larger thread too. I have an adept chuck which uses backplates instead of internal threading so it wouldn't be inconvenient. What is a more common thread for small lathes? Can't get any more exclusive than an adept whatever I pick.

        Am I correct in assuming this would ream MT0 sockets?

         

        Also how would one go about enlarging the holes on the headstock? I have seen people make bushings but don't know how to do it accurately.

            I was going to suggest an average sized bucket, just pick up the lathe , and dunk it. For normal work a little squeeze bottle, 100 -200 ml is more than enough.

              I know this thread is getting an excessive ratio of idea stuff: actual doing but atleast I finalised the spindle plan.

              Thread will be M14x1. Make a new faceplate for the adept chuck and it means I can buy a unimat chuck for self centred work.

              Bore taper will be MT0 rather than whatever it is now.

              Add an inch or more to the shaft length for a planned tachometer (wilko cycling computer), indexing wheel and eventually maybe autofeed gears.

              Not going to change the headstock yet and the pulleys seem ok to me.

              I have a source for toolsteel locally. If I get O1 toolsteel does anyone know a heat treating company that won't mind such a tiny job? I could try heating it with a blowtorch and quenching in oil but to minimise warpage I think a commercial setting is required. Any recommendations on hardness and depth of hardening?

              Alternativly if anyone knows a way to harden at home without damaging accuracy let me know.
