cylinder boring

Hello .. I am about to start boring the cylinder for my Red Wing engine , Is it easier to make the piston first and the bore the cylinder or bore first and make piston to fit .What do other's do ?

Which is easier to remake, if they don’t match? Which is easier to reduce/increase by a the odd 0.01mm (or less)?

I would bore first and fit the piston. Others may think differently.

+1. Not made this type of engine, but bore first is what I've always done for those I have, for the same reasons.

Hi Philip, establish the bore first and acheive the final finish before making the piston/rings to suit.

That way it does not matter if your cylinder is slightly over or undersize, a piston is always much easier to finish to suit a bore than the reverse

Hi Philip, standard engineering practice is bore the cylinder, bush, bearing first then make the mating part to fit, far easier to turn or grind to a size and remove small amounts of material from a shaft than a bore.

Models of the Red Wing I have seen build logs for have piston rings. Is this the case with yours? It may make the order of cylinder bore and piston diameter less important.

So I will make a piston sized plug and bore the cylinder , the make the piston to fit , Rings are supplied with the kit so piston size is critical.

I always do the cylinder first and then the piston but do the opposite when it comes to the crankshaft and all that fit around it as the crankshaft is the harder to make so bearings, flywheel and pulley are all done after.

That fits with the philosophy of protecting the investment you have already made either in money or time. Retain as many second chances on high value components as you can.
