My little -new-Chester Conquest has developed a bit of a wobble on the cross slide..The gibs are tight and there appears to be nothing else to adjust..I was going to take it apart but there also appears not to be a way to do that either!Help please..

Did you undo the locknuts before tightening the gib adjusting screws?

Hi, I have just modified the gibs on my lathe by fitting dowels to them this has eliminated all rock on the cross slide and the compound. it was a mod I had read about but having done it I recommend this mod to all. the other thing is to ensure that the gibs are thick enough to fill the space available. Hope this helps.

Perhaps put it on the cross bar of your bike when you peddle it to school tomorrow and ask the metalwork teacher. laugh

If no-one can help here there are loads of "mini-lathe" sites around with tons of mods

Here's a guide to adjusting the various slides.
A few shims here and there help take out some backlash.
Unwind the compound as far as it will go to remove it.
Take off the apron to slide the cross slide off the end of the bed, the various push/pull adjusting screws are then revealed.

Actually Jason was right..Dont know what I was thinking but but I hoped no one had noticed the thread-fat chance!

Still worth it though for all the new info you provide..

My metalwork teacher spent all summer in his office watching cricket and in winter the workshops were rebuilt..

One day I might put things on 'what did you do today'..The bee keeping is partiularly interesting..
