      Hi all

I have a clarke CL300 Lathe and i have decided to do the bearing upgrade from roller bearings to taper bearings, however i understand that a set of spacers need to be made prior to the upgrade to take into account the offset taper bearings, i was hoping that someone on here who has done the upgrade would be able to give me the dimensions of the spacers and the best material to use

      Thanks

      Leanne x

          Hi Leanne,

I have fitted taper roller bearings to my clarke CL300 lathe. I made some thin washers to compensate for the difference between the roller bearings and the ball bearings. Full details are here:

          I hope this helps.

            Hi Leanne ,

its been a while since I upgraded the bearings but the spacers inside the headstock need to be 1.25 mm longer and I needed to trim the inside of the plastic bearing covers to prevent the cage & rollers from binding

also I polished the spindle with emery cloth to make the bearing fit easier but still a good press fit

you will see from the diagram the inner part of the roller bearing is a different width and is off set

I'll have a look to see if I can find any note of how long the new spacers are

              Hi Leanne,

You may get some help from Arc Euro Trade's guide here: LINK

In particular, look at picture 62. The problem is how to turn down the shoulders on the internal spacers when your headstock is in pieces.

I worte a short series in ME 4275, 9 June 2006 and ME 4277 7 July 2006 on fitting roller bearings to mini lathes. I just used the original spacers – in order to ensure you can properly adjust the taper bearings they should not be kept at a fixed distance apart!

I also found I had to SHORTEN the back spacer (which lies outside the bearing) to ensure teh bull wheel lined up properly.

You should be able to find this article in the digital archives.

                Neil.
