Brazing job assistance required

Not sure if you can plate (Nickel or Chromium) soft solder.

The plating shop boys at Shrewsbury would not try with soft solder, insisting on hard solder or braze. Possibly the acid in the plating solution would dissolve the lead or tin in the soft solder.

Brazing will need the heavier parts to have the flame played on them for longer than the light ones, possibly to the extent of using the heat from the heavy parts to bring the thin ones up to the melting point of the spelter.

Hi Noel, I understand where you are coming from, however, brazing means making a joint of the same or two or more different metals with a filler wire that has a meting point lower than any of the metals you are joining, the filler wire can be any metal that is compatible, and the metals that you are joining should never reach their melting point. Yes in days of old, brazing was associated with brass / bronze filler wires.

according to wikipedia!!!. But surely there is silver brazing and bronze brazing and also bronze welding or has wikipedia swept them away???

Hi Bernard, welding is the fusion of the metals that you are joining, in brazing there should not be any fusion between any of the metals used in the joint, and the filler wire only adheres to the metals, hence, if you heat the joint up to the melting point of the filler wire, the joint will fall apart without having to melt the metals that you are joining. The filler wire can be any metal that is suitable. The terms soldering, silver soldering etc. just differentiate the different types of brazing.

In most cases if fusion does not occur then an amalgam of the various metal will be formed ? To reflow or melt a previous joint a temperature higher than the melting point may be needed. Noel.

Yes, there is bronze brazing and there is bronze welding. The difference between the two is well described in Lancaster, J.F. – “The Metallurgy of Welding, Brazing and Soldering”, George Allen and Unwin Ltd., 1965.

On whether in brazing and soldering there is any fusion going on, Lancaster states:

”In brazing and soldering there is almost invariably some degree of intersolubility between solder and parent metal, and consequently there is interdiffusion at the parent metal surface.”
