        Hey everyone

Can someone explain to me the use of these chucks? I assumed they were a predecessor of 4 jaw chucks from when I have occasioannly seen them on ebay but I discovered that they still sell new and for nearly a £100!

So I'm curious if these have some niche use or something. They must do something good for that price.

I may be wrong but Iv'e only ever seen them on watch lathes where a 4 jaw might be impracticable The one you show appears to have a shank for use in such a lathe

Yes they are a compact and economical alternative to a 4-jaw [especially if home-made] … but they do have a technical advantage; in that the workpiece can be adjusted for angular alignment with the headstock spindle, rather than just parallel offset.

[rarely needed; but let's make a virtue out of a necessity]

Larger Spider chucks are commonly used in gunsmithing when machining barrels etc, smaller ones in clockmaking.
