I recently bought a Meddings bench pillar drill (originally 3 phase) that someone has converted to single phase 240V My floor standing drill has an old ‘Startet’ starter/overload switch so I decided to fit one to the new drill, and made up the brackets and fitted it today but it keeps tripping. I cant read the motor label as its worn off, but on the higher Startet rating of ……..

….. hang on…. !!!! I read it a 8 amps but its 0.8 amps no wonder its tripping!! I have actually spent three hours fitting this today FOR GOODNESS SAKE

Who ON EARTH would need a starter at 0.8A though????

I started typing this post to ask what the problem of tripping might be, it now looks like either I need a higher rated starter or I will reconfigure mine to work just as an on/off switch.

So, what is the likely amp rating of a motor for a hefty bench drill any ideas ?

who would need a 0.8A overload = a small 3 Ph motor eg a suds pump. As for your drill you will need to give more info, does the data plate not show FL amps a wild guess would be 2-4A but depends, could be 1.5 – 1.8. Every motor should have an overload device ! Many do not.  Noel.

That starter has asbestos in it. wrapped around the contact arms. Probably best to carefully remove the entire starter, double bag it and dispose of it.

Beware, my local council requires you to get a permit to dispose of asbestos, they come out and inspect the packaging. All very well so far, but it is restricted to once for any address. Fortunately their record keeping is a little lacking, so I’ve had 2 so far. Second time it wasn’t even asbestos, it was glass fibre reinforced cement sheets, but I didn’t think it worthwhile arguing the toss. It would be a shame to use up your lifetime allowance on such a small item.

If it actually is asbestos, leave it well alone and put the cover back on. It is not a hazard inside there and undisturbed.

The usual non-metallic materials inside equipment like this are thermosetting plastic, e.g. ‘Bakelite’ and its descendants, and synthetic-resin bonded fabric or paper. Not asbestos.

The point though was the current rating of the starter-switch, not its materials.

To save Robert the trouble of commenting:

That fluffy-looking white blanket wrapped around each of the contact arms is almost certainlyAsbestos.

There’s nothing on the motor label at all, it’s paper and sadly faded/rubbed off so if anyone has any view on a typical drill motor ampage let me know!

Why on earth would I do that? Total snowflake chicken-licken advice I’m sorry to say.

I have to say those that panic about asbestos like this are living in cuckoo land. Yes of course it will be crysotile but in a tiny wrapped and covered quantity which cant suffer accidental damage. It will do zero harm left in situ.
I do asbestos surveys for a living and quite honestly anyone that seriously suggests as an opening line double bagging and disposal is either having a laugh or just ignorant, it just shows either the power of panic or the power of snowflake!

Do you think a 5 amp overload would do the job on a drill motor? I have one of those somewhere if I could only find it !!!
