What tool is suggested for turning 3/4″ scale chimney?

      What tipped tool is suggested?

What prefered method of producing it from a raw casting?

      Thanks

The first thing we need to know is the chimney for what ? What material ? Could be a fabrication, could be from solid or might be a casting but that might be costly. If being machined from non ferrous then sharp tool steel or a GROUND ( not molded ) tungsten tip. Tell us more. Noel.

It’s a cored casting, not solid with end spigot, from Reeves, gunmetal possibly.

As above but the tool shape will depend on the shape you need to generate. Sharp tool steel can be ground to suit the form and alter the shape of the tool as need be. Noel.

Depends on how big it is, what specific material it is, what you want to do with it, eg bore the inside diameter or plain turn the outside or form turn decorative rings on it etc.

Need more information to give a more specific answer. Otherwise it’s just a vague guess.

Thanks for all your replies.  Probably GM, it’s for a coal fired locomotive and is 2 1/8″high x 3/4″O.D. with a 1 1/8″ O.D. cap and a decorative ring a just below the cap.

It has been bored to a close fit on the petticoat pipe and I want to complete it.

<p style=”text-align: left;”>Ah well  , if it’s already been bored and it’s definitely  gunmetal or some kind of  bronze  , run of the mill insert tooling should do the job. The ground inserts usually work best, eg xxGT rather than xxMT. Decorative ring as Noel said can perhaps use a HSS form tool ground from a blank on the bench grinder. Or even a small ball turning tool if the ring is semicircular in cross section.</p>

After following this forum for quite some time now this is the first time I’ve seen mention of a graver.

I don’t think they make carbide tips for one of those Bernard 🤣🤣🤣
