Eccentric Straps & Rods

I am making both a stationary mill engine & a G1 engine. I notice that the eccentric strap and rods are often made separately and the joined. Is there any reason why they can't be made in one piece?

Often, the strap is made of brass and the rod of steel but can't see any reason seeing as both ends then run on a bearing.

No reason that you can't make them from one piece, infact a lot of smaller models have the strap/rod as a single gun metal casting.

A steel rod would be more typical of full size where economy would dictate the use of steel for the rod and also stronger for the same section of material.

I'd rather make the strap from bronze or cast iron rather than brass as they have better running qualities

Hello Nick

I'd suggest you make the rod and strap in steel and in one piece, make the eccentric from a piece of cast iron or drawn bronze and if you get a good finish on the running surfaces, with a drop of oil it'll go on for years.
