I bought a set about 30 years ago and have never used them, I guess, if the need arises, then you need one, depends what you do. It's usually a lot easier to make the hole a standard reamer size and make the shaft to fit, but I suppose some refurb jobs might be different.

Bought a set from an reputable online supplier I could have done a better job with a blunt file.They chatter like a load of sparrows,my fault though I should have bought a decent set in the first place.I have used quality ones in the past with no problems.I now tend to buy the reamer I need for the job as I go.

I would not use them in place of a standard size reamer but they do have their uses such as reaming out the king pin bushes on an Austin 7 to take +0.010" kingpins.

The parallel teeth will always make them a bit more prone to chatter.

I,v got two adjustable reamers, the first, a 1/4" one started as one with a broken blade, many years later got one with one blade, and a broken shank, result one reamer, its been quite handy at times, you need plenty of lub, and minimum amount to remove with each pass. Bought a 1" one for a job , but ended boring the pully on the lathe, its a good one, with very little use, and only cost $NZ20 at the local second hand shop. They are quite OK if used with care, take it much more carefully than with a fixed reamer of any sort. Ian S C

The type of adjustable reamer I have has an internal taper that expands the blades. Not like the English adjustable reamer where there are two threaded collars.

The taper adjustment is very fine and allows good true holes, it is surprising how out of round some holes are! The adjustments are very small, only a few 100/ths of a mm but very good for precision work.
