Good day to all!

I signed up because I purchased a Myford ML4 lathe, one with the motor mounted on the pedestal.

I understand this thread is not meant to ask any questions, I know. I will open a new topic about it in the appropriate section.

About myself:

• Almost 62 years old, 20th of November will be the day.
• I'm Dutch but living in France for the last 12 years, in a very nice small castle near Poitiers.
• Studied electronics and fine mechanics, so yes, I know how a lathe works.
• I like to restore cars, old and recent. I do bodywork, spray painting, rebuilding engines and gearboxes (automatic and manual), actually everything you can think of.
• I'm retired so that leaves time for my hobby's unless my wife decides otherwise, like renewing the roof. LOL!
• I do have a personal website where you can read everything I do and did to my cars. It's not commercial and I don't gain anything when you visit it. I'm not going to post the link right now, I want to have permission from the moderator(s) of this site in advance.
• What else? I do have 3 sons who are totally NOT into technical things. Yeah, that's a downer but I learned to live with that fact.
• Furthermore I just enjoy life, "living like a God in France" they say and actually it's not far off.
• Almost forgot, I built my own 3D printer which is working like a charm.

I got so many hobby's it's almost impossible to name them all.

So, thanks for letting me in and I do hope to learn something considering the Myford lathe.

Yes, I will put some parts of my projects in this thread. will be restoring a Mercedes and how to electroplate (copper, zinc, nickel and how to use di-chromate).

 

Well, Nick Wood is not my real name. I just translated it into English. I wanted something short, shorter than my real name which is Nico van den Bos. I tell you, that's a real Dutch name. LOL!

Wel, just a short part of my personal site and be sure there is very much more on it.

Starting off with the Mercedes 320cdi estate which I bought in Germany and towed home with my BMW 740i over more than a thousand miles. This is how it arrived. Yes, that house is mine.

At first glance it looked alright apart from "some" rust around the wheel arches. At least so it seemed. When I took the rear bumper off to make some space to treat the rust right I found this.

Yes, that's rotten through! No patch panels available so I had a project for last winter.

First I cut out the rusted parts.

Took a piece of .75mill steel plate and hand formed a new piece.

Welded it in place and most of this side is finished. Not quite but it's on my site in great detail on how I did it.

The other side was even worse…..

So again, cut most of the rotten steel out.

And started to reproduce the panels I needed from a piece of sheet metal.

..and many other pieces, welded together it looked like this.

I will jump forward to the prep work just before painting it.

First coat of primer.

Second layer of paint.

Second layer of clear coat or varnish if you like.

And the finished result.

Be sure I did a lot more to that car! I bought new front wings, restored the underside of all 4 doors, rebuilt the injectors, rebuilt the turbo and the list goes on and on.

Well, this is the first part I promised, be sure it's in far more pictures and greater detail on my site.

I'll make another post on how to electroplate nuts and bolts or even a bigger piece of metal. The basics are the same.

Hi Neil,

I can imagine you don't see much of sheet metalwork because it's either too expensive to do or there are ready made patch panels available. Just talking about the car industry. Alas that;s the way it works, real craftsmanship is seen less and less. Imagine, for me it's just a hobby. That includes I got the time to do it and second, I don't have to make any money off of it.

By the way, I listen to both, Nick or Nico will be just fine!
