Had a little chat with a very pleasant new lady at WARCO re: my recent order for more QCTP tool holders. I cheekily enquired as to how much the pestilence is duffing up their business only to be told that business is booming. It seems – she explained – that with little else to do folk have been splurging on kit and basically indulging themselves.

Could it be that this nasty bio critter will help in keeping our hobby alive and thriving?

Covid has been one of theose 'life is short' 'get on with the things you enjoy' moments. Happens with heart scares etc but in this case on a global scale. There will be many who actually retire, take shorter hours or change careers as a result. I think we have all re-assessed our priorities in some way.

Lots of businesses have flourished due to the virus. As mentioned Cowells is one.

Norvil, the firm that "make" and sell Norton spares, said in their news letter a year ago that they completely shut down at the start only to receive a lot of business on line. At the time of the news letter they had taken on new staff and were working seven days a week.

There is now a three month waiting list at the local firm that sells good quality sheds.

Fear not, indeed!

Ironically, lockdown has been a big incentive for people to get on with all sorts of hobbies – and if you've missed out on a holiday, why not spend some of it on something else that gives you pleasure and leisure?

The biggest problem for the specialists supporting our hobby has been getting hold of enough stock with high demand and problems with container movements (the cost has gone sky-high which will impact prices).

The last 18 months has seen a significant hiking of prices of lathes etc on ebay, even allowing for the garage traders with gold plated Myfords for sale, though on top of that there is a seasonal variation in availability and price anyway.
The vintage vehicle section of the agricultural show I am attending next week has seen a major increase in the number of restored car entries. Trouble is that a hint of rain and they don't want to take them out of the garage.

I am one of those pushing my ambitions onto the front burner. I joined my local Model Engineering Society and bought a milling machine from Warco, probably at least a year earlier possibly two or more, than I would have otherwise.

Absolutely no regrets, the little time I have been able to enjoy those two has confirmed it was the right thing to do.

Numbers for print are more or less static over the pandemic – which is an achievement in these days.

Electronic subs are increasing.
