Overnight I received a very simple eMail, purporting to be from ‘Service’

… quite unlike the recent style of ultra-realistic spoofs !

      .

      Subject : Important Information

Content : More information in document.

Attachment : a small [18 KB] html file named Importantinformation.htm

The actual sender appears to be [email protected]

      .

I suspect that this little attachment would prove to be ‘explosive’

      .

It is curiously tempting, in its “Drink Me” style dont know

Of course, I have not opened it … but if anyone with a safe environment to work in wants a copy, I am happy to to forward it for your investigation.

          Hi Michael,

Open it in a text editor then you can see what's in it.

            Thanks for the thought, John

… but I would probably rather not bother.

Just 'block sender' and delete, really not worth messing with. You can track the issuing mail server (sometimes) and eMail a complaint, but I think those 'abuse' mail addresses just point at a delete folder.

              Regards

              Steve

Doesn't your virus scanner handle email attachments?

                  .

The iPad and BT Email work together in mysterious ways … but they certainly don’t stop junk like this [or dodgy stuff masquerading as BT originated eMails] arriving in my Inbox.

To be clear … I only mentioned this ‘change of style’ as a warning to others

A similar scam has just appeared in my inbox; this claims that my TV licence runs out next month and should be renewed IMMEDIATELY.I have forwarded this to the TV licencing authorities.

This a very common scam these days. I am afraid it may catch many older people out now they have to pay for a licence.

                      regards

his sort of thing should be forwarded to the authorities at [email protected] Even if you have seen it before every report helps the authorites build a picture of what is going on.

Just forward the email with any attachments.

Thank you for that advice, Robert.

I did not know these services exist, but had tried ActionFraud in the past and found it useless.

I received an e-mail purporting to tell me my TV Licence is about to expire, but the dead give-away of its falsehood was a great long list of e-post addressees.

Besides, I have no licence for the TV I do not have; and no I do not watch TV programmes on-line.

I had also a more subtle one supposedly from BT, advising of a voice-mail message from a partly-disguised number that looked vaguely real, possibly London area, but corresponding to none on my address-list. At the foot of the message with its BT colour scheme, was some legalese that would have been more convincing had it not been written in French!

I had one trying to blackmail me so reported it to the local cop shop a lass had had same message so the police woman said.

Police community messaging lets me know the latest scams latest was an official looking gov document telling you had been in a charging area without paying.

I have had the charging area one as well.
