      So on capstan lathes it generally looks like there is a big bevel gear connected to the turret then a small bevel gear connected to the 6 stops.

      How do they design the gears so that the turret tools and their stops stay in sequence?

          Simples : It's not a 1:1 ratio. While the turret rotates 1 position at a time, the stops can rotate either 5 or 7 positions making the gearing much simpler
