Crosslide acme thread

I’m toying withe making a new 5/8 od crosslide feed screw . Is this possible to do by just holding in chuck and live centre on the tailstock without any other kind of support. ..ie..steady rest . The feedscrew is about 12″ . I’m only planning the thead part of the FS and then joining the none thread part to the new FS if that makes sense at all .

Hi Sean, personally I think you are pushing you luck without a travelling steady on this diameter and length ! I would use a travelling steady fitted with roller guides rather than the usual brass etc fingers.
As far as making it in two pieces — why ? far better to make it in one piece, I can see your thinking but the rest of the feed screw is probably a simple turning exercise unless there is say a gear for a cross feed so I would make the piece as one component. Just my opinion

I would be looking at using a travelling steady, even if just a suitably notched piece of brass bar held in the rear toolpost (use the topslide for infeed of the tool).

But you can buy lengths of Acme threaded bar from industrial suppliers at reasonable prices if you shop around a bit. Might be a way to go.
