I let my Grandson into my Shed yesterday as I needed to find something and he was with me. He asked me where I'd got all my "Junk" from….

After watching this video – I am even more depressed…

Well, I dunno. He obviously has plenty of time to polish his machines and tidy his shop.

Oh, I don't think so. I doubt that owning all that stuff would give me the capability to do a lot more than I do now.

Well he certainly does not come over as a "look at me" type, quite modest and pleasant in fact and he does have some very nice kit, despite having no boots.

His workshop however is not as nice as mine but there you go, you cant have everything….

He does appear to have made the hydraulic test rig and switch and of course all that bigger printer. I think some of the machines were his reconditioning projects too so there is maybe 10-15k in there probably over a few years. We adults would have to cost in the actual premises which is presumably his parents place.

Now when you come to think there are hundreds of thousands of UK households with incomes of >100k who spend 5k a year on holidays, boats, school fees, toys, cars for their elder kids then actually this is pretty trivial financially just better directed.

edit : google just gave me this "Survey claims a raft of high-earners and that nearly 50,000 make over a £1m. More than 1.2million people are earning over £100,000 a year, if a new survey of reported incomes is accurate" So there will be about 1000 children of equivalent age with million earning parents and 20,000 with >100k parents so sadly a vast number are losing the opportunity to set up a place like this.

Sour grapes? Nah! not really. I just don't need all that stuff to do what I want to do. Another thing, his mastery of English is far better than my German. All in all, he seems a lot cleverer than me and I wish him luck.

He must be working full-on to achieve all that and be a full time engineering student. The refurbishment and improvements of those machine tools looks first class, they all look better than new.

Why do people scorn at someone who likes to keep their tools/work space and machines clean? is being untidy and creating unsafe work space good? taking ages to find things because you're unorganized?

If you'd watched his video it explains he sleeved the quill bore of his Chinese mill with a bronze sleeve because it had half a millimeter of play when extended, which is pretty terrible, my Flott drill press doesn't even have that much play, he also hand scraped all the ways turning it in to good little machine, I bet there are people 3 times his age on here who haven't undertaken anything like that,

I guess people think differently, some look at his workshop and say I bet he's doing nothing in there because it's so clean and tidy, when I see someone with a pigsty of a workshop I say to myself, I bet they don't do much work in there, how could anyone get anything done in that mess.

Hi all and especially the doubters.

The link below is to his instagram like blog, it details the workshop tool restorations done and many other inovations.
The machines did not look the way they do now.

Oh! and a warning one of the photos shows him wearing shoes, and beware there is also a broom shown!

I do like the way he has approached a 3D printer design, Not the cobbled up bits of plastic that you see all over the net. I don't have a 3D printer but I am tempted to have a crack along similar lines after the Epoxy Mill project is finished, I am waiting for the bearings and ball screws.

It's rare that people of Theo's age (23?) with such impressive workshops and skills have achieved what they have without considerable parental involvement. It does look as if this is the case here too: https://forum.zerspanungsbude.net/viewtopic.php?t=14103

I say this not to detract from Theo's achievements but in order to put them in context, mainly for people like myself who had little or no parental guidance in any of the practical activities they chose to undertake in their youth.

People in my position can easily be demoralised by seeing such a young person with such a well equipped workshop and such an array of practical skills at his fingertips. However, learning how he got there at that age (i.e. thanks in no small part to parental involvement) goes a long way towards explaining why you didn't, and exonerating you (with your sense of self-worth intact, or maybe even heightened) for not having done so.

it's just a shame that for most of us we have to have 1 foot in a coffin to have something like that…….

oh, and a smaller shed……..hahaha…..

said it before, when my turn comes all my machines will be gifted to a young person who I'll help train….

just to set him up for life……

That workshop looks exactly like mine,a place for everything and everything in its place. Neat and tidy,clean floor [plus brush ],good lighting ect.

To me that would be just like a home-from-home,well,more or less. [maybe less ]

Must have cost quite a few Marks/Euros to set it up Sour grapes ? Yes of course,but then, I like grapes !

No,really,it,s a fine set up and I wish him luck and a long life to enjoy it.

Meanwhile,back at the ranch—————- now where did I drop that Allen key? must be here somewhere !
