trying to find a 3ft rule with just imperial markings.

it's going to inlaid into a bench my eldest daughter wants building for her design work.

even though only 17 prefers what she proper measurements.

similar idea to tailors bench.

tried e-bay but no joy or not using right search words.

What,s wrong with Metric ? most clothing these days comes in Metric sizes anyway.

Larry it's not for clothing it's design work she does and as grown up with me using old style measurements.

If the rule is for dressmaking, try to find a rule marked in 1/8" or 1/10" as smaller divisions would not be required. Perhaps ask if she works in 1/8 or 1/10" ??

As a model engineer shouldn't you be getting a nice piece of brass strip and engraving it, using the lathe leadscrew to set the dimensions?

I found this stainless steel rule at Poundland or Poundworld several months ago here in Wales. The edges were very sharp, but smoothed up nicely when stoned. One inch wide, thirty thousandths thick, and forty inches long. Its Imperial on one edge of the scale reading in 16 ths. and the other edge in 10 ths. of an inch. On the reverse side its Metric. Couldn't go wrong for a pound considering they were much more expensive else where. I believe, but not sure, I have seen them also in a chain store here in South Wales called……. " What ".

How about an old boxwood folding carpenter's rule? You'd need to incorporate the brass hinges, but I think it would look nice.

I have a couple of 60cm poundland ones but the scales are not spot on in terms of accuracy. Not a problem for most work but almost 1mm difference over 60cm between the two rulers.

Hi Mick 70,

No offence intended. I too grew up with feet and inches,but had no bother getting used to Metric. Now I use both,which is the more suitable for the job. It,s just that if you mention feet and inches to young people now,they look at you as if you came out of the Ark ! [but even Noah did not use that system ] Nice to know that long rules like that are still around,have not seen any of those mentioned by Mike E although I would like to pick up one of them if they show up here.

Same here.

And I have one imperial and one metric lathe, and one imperial and one metric milling machine, so I am lazy sometimes and do jobs on whichever one suits the dimensions or specification of the job in hand.

Some of the D I Y stores do Metre long rules with imperial along one edge, and Metric along the other.

Mine's Aluminium, but suffices for "near enough" jobs.
