Hi Folks,
I acquired a second-hand Tom Senior with the small vertical head connecting to the horizontal spindle. Machine seems in relatively good condition, though poorly adjusted. Probably seen little care.
There is axial play in the spindle of the vertical head and in the driving shaft (which connects to the horizontal spindle of the machine).
I’m trying to understand how the play can be removed, firstly in the horizontal axis. There is a nut pointing to the front. I guess either that needs tightening, or shim/washers behind it. Can’t loosen that nut though.
I’ve tried carburator cleaner to remove sticky oil, penetrating oil, and now some heat. I do not see what holds the nut in place. Can only think of glue. I’ve engaged the backgear to lock the spindle, not sure whether that is a good idea.
Any advise?
Next will be the vertical spindle. I see that both upper and lower bearing slip up and down in the housing, seems strange. Not clear how to preload that to remove play.
Thanks
Christophe
