I've now bought a replacement and the worn bush on the left is definitely a different colour to the Myford bush on the right?
What might have some bearing on the wear (no pun intended) is that when I got the lathe home I noticed the lead screw was going tight and loose when rotated, and when I undid the bracket near the tailstock the lead screw sprung down about 5mm and became free rotating, and I think this misalignment was caused by the quadrant which sticks out underneath the end of the quick change gearbox getting a nudge upwards at some time.
How long it has been like that I don't know but I think the misalignment could have been a factor in the wear on the bush.
