      I’ve been looking at making a spindle handle for the lathe and I think I have a good understanding of the design aspects of an expanding mandrel with a handle, however I came across this thread.

      I was wondering if anyone had made one for a ML4 as mine is?? With the dividing head? There is a spare bolt at the back, I assume for the cover or the overhead pulley system (now not fitted) so I think something could be bolted to this to get it operational, what’s the thoughts please?? Also is there a thread with drawings for the handle or are most just measure built and fit to the lathe??

          Hello Jon,

          I made mine [for the ML7] but it it is as you say a measure, build and fit to the lathe job. I think you will find it invaluable at times. I don't though understand how you contemplate attaching it using a bolt hole, mine and all others I know of rely completely on an expanding collet in the mandrel bore to get a grip.

          As for the dividing head aspect, that surely is better operating on something solidly attached to the spindle such as the bull wheel, or the small gear on the end of the spindle driving the change wheels down to the leadscrew. You do have an awkward tooth number bull wheel at 65 but bearing that in mind you could make up a working tool.

            This is how I did it for my mini-lathe many years ago now. Mike Chrisp expressed concern the rear of the mandrel on some lathes may not be bored concentrically enough for accurate dividing, but my mini lathe's bore is less than 0.001" TIR at the back.

              I made one for my mini-lathe and milled a hex nut on the driving end. Then I used a ratchet driver and socket to turn the lathe spindle rather than a hand crank. Not sure where I got the idea from, I didn't invent it! The main advantage is not having to make a handle, but the ratchet feature was helpful as I was short of space. I only used mine for threading: by the time I finished it I had a mill and a rotary table.

              Although I intend making another for my WM280 it's slipped down my to do list. The WM280 can do 30rpm under power which is slow enough especially after Jason taught me his 'cut threads in reverse' trick. Since adopting Jason's threading method I've stopped powering the cross-slide into the headstock!

                Sorry Brian I wasn't clear in my post the bolt and hole is to attach a bracket so that I can make the handle into a dividing head (as pictured In one of the posts above) the handle will still use the conventional expanding mandrel.

                  Thanks Neil, that''s sort of what i had in mind, but you make a good point on the concentricity of the bore, something I'll have to check before proceeding I think.

                    Dave i quite like that method, ill look at costs of the ratchet spanners as this may work out an easier cheaper option, plus mean that the it doesn' need to be removed every time if I'm not using the full length of the spindle for my piece of work

                      Yes, that's a big advantage too. I forgot to mention it. It's very easy to detach a ratchet handle.

                      What happens when a lathe is powered up with a spindle handle still plugged in is best left to the imagination!

                        Hello Dave,

                        I can tell you !!

                        My lathe is bolted down but it did make the bench shake quite a lot. I have fitted a 'Panic' bar across the front of all my machines for hands off stopping in extremis; that was one occasion it got used as intended

                        I know of another similar excursion that did damage, but to protect their identity I can only say I know it happened.

                          Me too, things can get very lively, although if you have been following another post on the forum regarding startup procedure, then this lap in concentration is less pants filling. There have been times I have been grateful for a not too powerful lathe, but it can still hurt (lots!)
