What is the difference between CCGT 060202 and CCGT 060204 ? Can either be used for machining brass, bronze, aluminium and silver steel ? Are they the equal in size and shape so that they will fit in the same holder ?

NOTE : I thought I had asked this question before but I could not find it using the search box.

The last two numbers designate the radius 02 = 0.2mm 04 = 0.4 mm .

Other than that they are the same and will fit the same holder , i don't see an issue with machining the materials you listed .

There are dozens of carbide insert charts on the internet and i know that kyocera and sandvik both have apps you can put on your phone or ipad etc .

For your small lathe I would go with the 02 as the smaller tip radius will be more suited to the shallow cuts you are limited to taking.

The 04 tip will be a bit more robust and may last longer, but I also like an 02 tip on my small lathe (Myford Speed 10 ). The small radius also makes it possible to produce nice sharp internal corners.

I use the 202 for copper boiler tube and find it 'sharper' than the 204 and less likely to grab. I have broken a few inserts but you have to do something pretty brutal to damage them. I buy the very cheap ones and they perform perfectly on my slow running L5, so much so that I now use nothing else.
